I went to Hamer Toyota and they had balls to mark those up 3k plus 1k gps add-on. Came to $56.5k with no negotiation because stimulus money is here and dealers wants it all. Sad state

Hydrogen Fuel cell is exempt from CA rebate income limits.

"The income cap applies for all eligible vehicle types except fuel-cell electric vehicles."

I always had issues with these tax credits. Basically we are subsidizing wealthy people to progress technology. The tax credits should have an income cap or not exist at all. Felt the same way about the Chevy Volt and Tesla.

People buying toys using our tax dollars. Sorry to be a grump.

Also, I thought they had promising developments on hydrogen paste. Much more stable and easier to store, high energy density similar to gasoline. Unless they can convert current hydrogen fuel cell cars... that car will be an expensive tax payer funded collectors item.

Your location? I see 4 locations for filling here in Sacramento area.
Ontario, CA. When I leased Mirai (1-june-2018), Ontario had an operational H2 station. Riverside and Diamond Bar were other two closer stations at that time. On 2-June-2018, Ontario station closed, and sometime last year, Riverside closed too. Had enough of this already. Again, my experience is different and may not applicable to you.

Thule or Yakama roof rack. Done. Although not as safe/secure as locked inside a vehicle.
If you've ever had a car where you can just slide a board in and out this is not something you ever want to do again. Maybe fine for the occasional weekend surfer but not the folk that surf multiple times per week on their way to work/errands, etc

I'm a kayaker and often carry two up (16' sea kakak, 14'sot) and on the water 2-4 x a week. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to tie down both, less for single. I also paddle board (12') and that's a 5 minute job..easy peasy. When I take my class c rv, it pack a high quality inflatable as there is no way I want to tap into the roof for a rack install and also it's way too tall.

Batteries can be recycled, and once that process is refined the environmental impact is greatly reduced.
That is a guess as we don't currently have the ability to recycle ev batteries as you describe.

They said this about NGVs too. They are still here, and my 2009 is still refuellable.
As long as you stay close to home.... I have always thought NGV was a viable option since the world has a glut of the stuff and why it is still the cheapest and the most clean of the reliable sources of energy for creating electric and even hydrogen... well, besides nuclear if they would use MOX facilities or like Canada and not trying to enrich uranium for weaponry.

PS: Maybe get one of these.... [fuel-maker.com]

So if I only owe $500 I can still get the full credit? And let's say i already had $10000 federal taxes withheld already from my paycheck.
Then you're going to owe more, because your standard tax deduction is likely $24000 and to get the $8000 you would have to itemize.

I can't confirm your height issue, but I have a nice rack from Thule and I didn't need to tap into my roof. It clamps on and I've had it for four years. Obviously check around, but even after never removing it over that four years my seals were fine. Recently removed it because the rubber used for clamping no longer has the same compression ability. Probably my fault I've been carrying drywall/lumber on top of my car for the last year lol. ($50 replacement rubber from ebay)

My only real con is.. it does suck that I can't just hop through those bad for your paint automatic carwashes without removal.

Seriously though - I fretted over the purchase. "$300 for this??" But would buy again without questioning.

Hydrogen is not quite ready for prime time. In fact, it still mosty is refined from fossil fuels and production of it generates a lot of greenhouse gas.

Short term, electric is better, even with the finite resources needed to produce the batteries.
Sorry to burst your bubble about electric cars, but they are also "mostly from fossil fuels" - just a different kind of fuel from a different part of the world. Electric vehicles simply help the owner feel better about himself, without realizing that the emissions are just being shunted to a different country that doesn't have our regulations.

For electric vehicles, where do you think electricity comes from? Where do you think all the plastics, paint, synthetic rubber, lubricants, etc. come from? (About 50% of an EV's volume is made from plastics.)

The EV batteries use rare-earth toxic materials (lithium, cobalt, graphite, etc.) which cause large emissions. More than 90% of these rare-earth materials are extracted from China, and somehow we feel like their emissions are not our problem. (In comparison, US gasoline and diesel is now mostly produced in the US.)

New studies show that renewable diesel (different from Biodiesel) has about 40%-50% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to EVs (when you look at the Life-Cycle Analysis).

In summary, just like lottery tickets are a tax for stupid people (or people who can't do math), EVs are a tax for environmentalists who have too much money. (But the federal govt subsidizes the cost by collecting some of the EV-tax from all working Americans.) Don't fall for it.

This might be the one of the most in-depth, high quality posts I've seen on SD.

Excellent post OP! May not make sense for everyone but a great deal for those where the, albeit narrow, use case fits.

This thread should be called the Anti-EV Soapbox instead of 2021 Toyota Mirai. Many comments dissing new tech are probably from people driving huge gasoline hogs.
