I went to Hamer Toyota and they had balls to mark those up 3k plus 1k gps add-on. Came to $56.5k with no negotiation because stimulus money is here and dealers wants it all. Sad state

Hydrogen Fuel cell is exempt from CA rebate income limits.

"The income cap applies for all eligible vehicle types except fuel-cell electric vehicles."

Hydrogen costs about $17/kg. The Mirai has a capacity of 5.6kg and can drive up to 400 miles, best case. $95/tank. For the same miles in an EV costs about $14.
That's the current price of hydrogen. However, ammonia (NH3) is manufactured cheaply and can be converted to H2 at the pump. The price producing is that way is $3-$4 per kg.

I believe they are a permanent solution for smaller cars.

The problem is that many people don't have garages to charge their cars and battery charging is unlikely to get much more faster than it is now.

If you live some weird existence where you have to drive over 300 miles a day then EVs may not be for you.

When I road trip I stop for 15-20 minutes to charge 60% which is long enough to hot a bathroom and crack my back. Not sure where you got an hour; superchargers are pretty quick.

As an aside, I've visited a supercharger 4 times in 31 months. Destination chargers are sweet.
God forbid anyone drives places other than Whole Foods

How does that change the fact that battery production is extremely harmful to the environment? By your logic, battery production will only continue to exponentially increase until it's unsustainable. Just like coal.

Hydrogen is a true renewable.
Batteries can be recycled, and once that process is refined the environmental impact is greatly reduced.

I was thrilled to read about this tech in use. I had heard big rigs (fleets) would be the first to become main stream. I did not know this was available.

One of the biggest problems we have with wind energy is it cant be stored, but you could use that energy to create Hydrogen! If we could generate enough, we could replace the whole grid
with pipes of hydrogen with zero loss of energy. Those HIGH POWER electric lines strung in the air loose a lot of energy just distributing it. I only see good on this one and I am not a tree hugger. A good Gas motor is not is pretty hard to beat, but electric motors are durable and offer the advantages of quite, a smooth ride..

I am not for solar and wind for grid use, but as a way to develop and store hydrogen seems like the logical steps forward.

As far as this deal goes, with all the rebates and subsidies, it would be hard to ignore the price point.

We could be using Natural gas in big rig fleet vehicles now. It just seems it does not get the attention it should because it puts the source of heat for homes on the spot market. That is if regulations curb production the value of the energy is changes they way Texas electricity went during the freeze last month. For any replacement of any fuel the price and dependability are huge factors in judging the value of the perceived benefit. Lithium ion batteries are a ecological nightmare if used in a world scale. Hydrogen seems too perfect.

I want to check one of these out under the hood, but not until California opens back up. I guess another year to build out the hydrogen stations..
Hydrogen is not ideal for being piped because it causes metal to become brittle. Since we already produce ammonia (NH3) and have a nationwide network of pipes, it makes more sense to pipe ammonia to fuel stations and convert it to hydrogen (H2) thee.

Recycling batteries also isn't carbon neutral. Hydrogen doesn't need to be recycled, like, at all.

What are you talking about, lmao. Battery research has been on-going for 100+ years.

"The first successful electric car made its debut around 1890 thanks to William Morrison, a chemist who lived in Des Moines, Iowa. His six-passenger vehicle capable of a top speed of 14 miles per hour was little more than an electrified wagon, but it helped spark interest in electric vehicles."
Right, electric vehicles have been a serious consideration since 1890. Gosh I remember Grandpa Jones coming home and plugging his first electric car in.

If you're going to make ridiculous comments that a child can see through at least use some fun emojis.

I knew someone would say that, but recharging speed hasn't changed much since electric cars hit the road.

There's potential for faster charging, but it's probably a decade off.

The distribution network for a BEV is already in place here, as well as little towns in kazakhstan. Hydrogen is a noble fairy tale. The mechanics behind it are too complex compared to an EV. I wish hfc vehicles were viable but I don't see it. Jmho.

If you're being serious about EV players, Tesla is the only one in a game right now. They are innovating because that is the culture at that company. I would predict that once Rivian and Polestar and all the major manufacturers catch up to consumer demand and start pumping out real competition we're going to see some pretty amazing things. There's research in capacitor tech that's supposedly mind blowing.

Just wanted to add, charging speed is not as important as capacity. Once you get to about 600 usable miles you start reaching the limit of how far you'd want to realistically drive in a single day. I actually throttle the rate of charge on my Model 3 to 40A instead of 48A simply because I prefer to not max out my 60A circuit. Do I care if the car takes 3.2 hours instead of 2.7 hours to recharge while I'm sleeping? Nope!

So how does the tax credits work? Do you get the money back while filing tax or if you owed $8000 to IRS then you don't pay up to the credit value of $8000 when filing?
Not well versed with tax credits and I trust our SD community to give honest pointers/answers.
TIA.

Cars aren't the only application of high capacity batteries. You're delusional if you think everyone magically decided to work on advancing battery technology 10 years just because they figured out how to put them in a car.

That's because once the fuel card runs out then you're stuck with a vehicle that only takes expensive gas. And no one wants that.

I think if you can lease this it's an awesome deal.

Its already bad enough that there isn't many filling stations and to make matters worse the fuel cell dispenser is jammed or busted half the time. My co-worker spends half his day at work running around to find a functional station and even then the lines are 10 deep.

Good if you can lease to get the carpool sticker and return it after 36 months...its super expensive to own since fuel cells cost like 3x the cost of unleaded.

Turn and burn baby!
