I went to Hamer Toyota and they had balls to mark those up 3k plus 1k gps add-on. Came to $56.5k with no negotiation because stimulus money is here and dealers wants it all. Sad state

Hydrogen Fuel cell is exempt from CA rebate income limits.

"The income cap applies for all eligible vehicle types except fuel-cell electric vehicles."

what's your insurance like for this one? I'd be curious as to what the annual insurance and registration costs are...
I was quoted 800 a year for 10k miles, 100/300 coverage through costco ameriprise, but ymmv with age/history. Initially TTL was $589 so probably around that figure or less for annual registration.

Thanks! I have costco ameriprise so I imagine my quote would be similar. which Toyota did you go to? (i'm assuming you're in OC/Irvine area) I'm in the same general vicinity as well and am tempted to get in on this one.

Doing some fuzzy math it would seem like Hydrogen would need to be in the range of $6-7$ a KG to compete with gas? I have a sonata hybrid....Pretty reliably 35-40 MPG so call it 10 cents a mile. I don't think that price is economically viable as the electricity involved to make it will always be worth more than energy storage. You could use off peak energy, but in California that's expensive too and planned for EVs. It seems like EVs can store a KWh and consume it more efficiently than converting it to Hydrogen. It seems like if you strip all the subsidies away, even at scale, the only way to make the math work on these is to forget EVs exist.

"A 100% efficient electrolyser requires 39 kWh of electricity to produce 1 kg of hydrogen. The devices today require as much as 48 kWh/kg. So, if electricity costs are 0.05 US$/kWh, the power cost for the electrolysis process alone is 2.40 US$/kg of hydrogen."

So walk this quote above back, a Tesla can go 100 miles on 36KWH. The same 36KWH gets you at theoretical maximum 60 miles or so on a fuel cell.
I have a Model S and at a steady 70mph it shows using 280Wh/mi on average. So that's 100 miles with 28kWh ! The Model 3 and Y are even more efficient.

This heavily YMMV. As in it's only available in CA and Hawaii based on inventory.

It's not. It'll probably be around $7k when you resell to dealer at the end of 6 years.
People are purchasing assuming it will go to zero (worst case scenario). Take a test drive and you will see how nice it feels and rides.

Let's say hydrogen tech is gone 6 years from now, parts in this car are worth some good dollars. The platinum in the converter and the carbon fiber on the 3 fuel tanks alone are worth a lot.
Are you sure? I'm a big fan but I am hoping to sell it for $8k after 3 years. I agree with you on selling for parts only but who will buy it?

samsungs70Noob question: Can someone explain why the car value is almost $0 after 6 years?
It is pretty obvious that this car has $0 resell value. Check the Longo CPO inventory, there are plenty of 2017s for $10K plus free $15k fuel cards. Unless the H2 price drop dramatically, no one will want this car. It is just too expensive to drive. With that said, this is still a great deal with all the incentives, tax credit, rebates and fuel card. Probably most dealer are out of this trim, I saw 14 in stock on Longo online inventory before the weekend, now there is only 2. But still plenty of the Limited in stock for 10k more. Hopefully, Toyota will start doing lease promotions, then I will be in for one.

When you can't buy hydrogen fuel anymore this car is good to do an LS engine swap.

I got the last XLE on Sunday at Toyota Santa Monica dealership. Kevin was super nice and made the whole process really easy.
They don't know if they will get more before the end of the month since the $20,000 deal is only good until then end of March and who knows maybe they will extended to April.

Car drives great and although it's not a sports car, it's perfectly fine for LA traffic and that electric torque makes it feel snappy.

Super happy with my car =)

This car is not for everyone and we can only hope Hydrogen fuel cars pick up since the technology actually benefits the planet more than an electric car. I mean you purify the air as you drive!!!! and the car pees water which evaporates and hopefully we get more rain.

SF Toyota ran out of the XLE models and other dealers seem to run out soon too. lol I guess I'll wait for next promo if Toyota is serious about moving this market.

there's also some arguments about the process of producing hydrogen may not be as earth friendly.
