Is this any better than the black 5TB WD MyPassort (non ultras) that were going for around 95-100 just a few weeks ago ? Is it because its silver and formatted for Mac out of the box that we are paying the 10 dollar premium ?

I see this has USB Type C. Does this actually make any real performance benefits or otherwise ?

I've been tracking this these specific 5GB models for months (both Win and Mac) waiting on a deal and this is definitely the lowest in a long time. I held of last Dec when the Windows version dropped to $119 a few places - this is a solid deal.

There are a number of other WD portable 5GB models but these are the only Ultra ones with a USB 3 Type-C connector instead of most others with a USB 3 Micro-B connector.

I see.. does the USB 3 Type C controller actually make much of a difference vs Micro-B though ?

I don't think there is a speed advantage but for me it's about standard cables as this one is one of the few with a USB 3 Type-C connector instead of most others with a USB 3 Micro-B connector. I don't want to have to hunt down a USB-A <-> USB Micro-B given USB-A <-> USB-C and USB-C <-> USB-C are far more common now and going forward - even most Android cell phones and other devices that used Micro-B have moved on to USB-C.

Paid $117 on Amazon a few months ago. Been solid since purchased as Time Machine drive. Don't mind paying a few more dollars for this over the My Passports to get USB-C.
