Right after you turn the phone on and activate it, then either port out or cancel/stop your service. The phone will unlock in 60 days, regardless if you stay with Verizon.

I currently have a VZ family plan with a few G data plan. Can I just buy the S21 for $549 with monthly payment without changing to a more expensive plan? Thanks.

Surely there's countless YouTube videos that will show comparisons and be far more useful than trusting a random poster's opinion on a deals app I would think. But if that's what you want this phone (S21 Ultra) as a whole beats about everything in my opinion and that includes iPhone and Android. Get on YouTube and watch some videos and you can decide if you agree.
