Just comparing scratch resistance, it's worth noting that the Hardlex is substantially better than standard mineral glass.

Mineral glass is about a 5 on the Mohs scale, Hardlex is around an 8. A sapphire watch crystal would be about a 9 and diamond is a 10.

Also, supposedly these Seiko 5 Divers have a lot of overlap with the more popular Seiko mod parts, so it should be possible to swap in an aftermarket sapphire crystal if this hardlex ever gets too banged up.
I already have two basic Tissots. I really don't need this but damn do I want it.
Excellent as a poor man's seamaster, a general beater watch

Great watch but the fit and finish flaws are sometimes visible. For example, the rotating bezel on mine does not hit 12 o'clock or any of the hour hands exactly.

A highly known issue, Seikos have alignment issues... they just restructured their Corp people... maybe they will finally address jt

Islander watches are a fantastic value, and Marc from Island Watch is a great guy who's done a lot for the watch community with his YT videos and such. If anybody in the watch world deserves our money it's him.

(Also, most if not all of the Islander watches are powered by Seiko movements!)

But man, I just can't get past that Islander logo. Holy crap, it looks so budget. Looks like a logo for a brand of WalMart-exclusive kids watches or something. I really hope he revises that at some point, or at least stops putting it on the watch dials.

Yea I really want to support Marc and buy an islanders but the brand/logo is a bargin bin looker

Silly assumption. All? No. What percentage of Seiko watches do you think are messed up QC to label "all"? Ridiculously exaggerated from mostly seiko haters who never had them or others who bash it to justify paying huge bucks for their watch. Also bad experience is heard far more than all the good experiences that are quiet. People don't go post all their good experience but when people have bad experience, they definitely post about it.... Considering how many Seikos are sold throughout the world? There will be some misaligned at rare instances but Ridiculously exaggerated. Also people need to remember the majority of Seiko prices.... Not exactly high priced luxury watch where perfection for every single watch is a must.

This watch has a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on Amazon. It looks like people are quite happy with its quality. The Pepsi color bezel and the black face also have 4.5 ratings as well.

Here is a link from Amazon which shows the Seiko 5 Sport watches being very highly rated among verified purchasers who actually have the watch. Seiko has been around since 1881. They are a highly respected brand and know what they are doing.

I'm a seiko fan and have owned 2 5 sports and a samurai. All 3 had either bezel insert alignment issues or chapter ring issues or both so I'm 3/3 for qc issues. A lot of seiko fans will admit that their qc is lacking. Hell, there's even alignment issues with the $1,000+ captain willard reissued diver. I like seiko and respect what they have done for horology but I'm not gonna be blind to the lack of qc, especially with them being such a large company.

Same here! There's a few models that I almost pulled the trigger on but that logo just doesn't work on those dials.

Great watch, great price. I can't stand the tilted "5" they use now unfortunately though.

I have 4 Seiko and that includes skx007, samurai, field watch and this watch and they are perfectly aligned. 4 for 4. I know there will some lil increase in misalignments when some are put together in countries like Malaysia rather than Japan but I think it is overblown especially when you look at the thousands of verified purchased reviewers praise the watch with 4.5 out of 5 score. If they all were receiving misaligned chapter ring and hour markers, the purchased reviewers would DEFINITELY be pointing it out and would be lowering the score more. The score would be much lower than 4.5 and I highly doubt that Amazon is posting fake customer reviews or deleting all the bad reviews too. My experience with Seiko is more like the thousands of the Amazon verified purchase reviewers with the 4.5 out of 5 score. Very positive and very happy with the alignment.

I am a big fan of the new 5 logo. It looks way classier and looks more like a disguised s badge. Before the larger number 5 logo screams "budget line" so one really wants to hide that and the new logo did that with the new design.

Wear it more throughout the day and problem is solved.... It states 41 hour power reserve and that is what I experience. If you are getting less than 24 hours, your watch is broken, you don't move enough or don't wear it long enough throughout the day.

Nope, read it a few times. I simply don't see where it mentions the crystal. Pasted the website description below. If I missed it I'm sorry for wasting you time. Mr. McNasty. But your comment was very helpful though, thank you.

Missed the part about the $1000 seiko with misalignment? How many of those you think they make? If they skimp on qc on that model you think they wouldn't on their low end models? If you look around seiko lovers learn to live with the misalignment but they don't deny that seiko has qc issues. You maybe biased with your experience but you can't deny the experience of thousands of others. All watch reviewers and youtubers acknowledge this so I'm not the only one.

I acknowledge there will be an increase when there is some shift in production to other countries rather than Japan but I highly doubt it is as high with misalignment issues as some people make it out to be. Some people make it seem 50% of the watches come misaligned... When the Amazon purchased reviewers gave it a 4.5 out of 5 score from thousands of verified purchases, they didn't "learn to live with their misalignment" and be perfectly fine with it and did not want to make mention of that con. Amazon verified customers would happily knock the score for misalignment issues but they really didn't on Amazon. Do people believe that the Amazon batch were handpicked by QC to send the best batches? No. As I said earlier people can't forget the millions of Seiko watches being sold compared to the competitors (naturally people will get QC issues more than other competitor brand who sells far less), majority of lower prices and "bad experience is always heard more often and the good experiences aren't really acknowledged enough".

Nothing to say on misaligned captain willards that costs $1000? You think they make a ton of those where you would see more people complaining about qc, especially for $1000? Take a look at seiko forums and you will see this qc issue as a meme. Those thousands of amazon reviews are mostly for non dive watches. No bezel or separate chapter ring, no misalignment. Want to prove otherwise? How about a link to a dive watch with thousands of reviews.
