I stumbled upon these a few weeks ago and grabbed a set for my dad and I. I don't think they'll impress a chef or anyone with some serious cutlery but this is a fantastic set for $60. I paid $80 for the first set and thought they were a deal at that price so $60 is a steal. We're both very happy with them.

No, the block consists of a piece of acacia wood with a piece of acrylic on either side allowing the knives to slide between the wood and acrylic to be on display while stored.

Anyone know how this compares to the Henckels Elan 10 knife set from Costco for $79 from about 1 month ago? I just got my order shipped but have not opened it up yet.

Looking for decent everyday knife set for a student moving into an apartment.

The same abrasive quality that washes crap off your dishes has a dulling effect on knife edges, so they would go dull super fast. Also extended exposure to a hot wet environment is great for rust to form, and most people are not great about unloading a dishwasher the moment it's done. Even stainless steel rusts, albeit slowly. Finally, these have wooden handles which would also get damaged in a dishwasher. Granted not immediately, but leaving wood in a wet environment for hours on end is a recipe for warping and leeching the oils out of the wood which keep it in good shape.

Washing in a dishwasher is not an immediate death sentence for knives, but over time it will wear them out exponentially quicker. If you don't mind trying to cut tomatoes with a butter knife, the convenience of a dishwasher is probably more valuable than a sharp edge, as it is for my in laws, but I love my knives sharp enough to shave with.

Can anyone give me educated advice on how these compare to this knife set:
https://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-...276&sr=8-7

I much prefer the block of the Cuisinart set, but wondering how the knives are.

I'm not a chef, but I've been doing meal prep for Blue Apron meals. Is there a best "bang for your buck" set under $150?

This guy is likely buying from Costco and reselling. Nothing wrong with that. With the Amazon listing having no reviews, I suspect that Costco is his supplier.

Flipped through the comments only to find there are no posts addressing the "Full Tang" aspect of this product. Disappointed...

All knifes are dishwasher safe if you just don't care.

Seriously though, anything wooden shouldn't go through the dishwasher very often or it will dry and crack eventually from the wet/heat, wet/heat cycles. Anything steel shouldn't be left wet (if you were thinking of letting it air dry) so put simply "not dishwasher safe".

Full bolster is a hard pass. Any knife with a full bolster cannot be taken seriously. The bolster will stick out after years of sharpening.

If you are on a budget the Ikea 365+ line is very affordable, very comfortable and uses the same German steel as Wusthof. Both Ikea 365+ and Schmidt Brothers are made in China but Ikea is much better and cheaper. You can buy the pieces you need individually too.

We got a badass set of Schmidt Brothers knives for our wedding back in 2013. Same type of block but the knives are black coated with rubber handles. Slowly the rubber has started degrading starting with the chef knife (most used). I was worried about the warranty since we didn't have a receipt because it was a gift. I emailed them a picture and had a replacement knife in my mailbox 4 days later. Absolutely phenomenal customer service. The latest one we got a replacement a month ago and even during covid times I still got that knife in a week. I won't buy any other brand now, just because their customer service has been as good as anyone could ask for.

Reviews are not that good. Also read some reviews on Amazon of other products of this brand, low rated. Seems like cheap Chinese knives that use the word German a lot, but are not German. What exactly is "German Stainless steel" that is made in China?
Supposedly it's steel from Germany that is then shipped to China to be manufactured. The funny thing is German steel is inferior to basically any other modern steel so you're getting the worst of both worlds.

German steel don't mean it's from German. Chinese manufacturers use the German steel composition and call it German
