I stumbled upon these a few weeks ago and grabbed a set for my dad and I. I don't think they'll impress a chef or anyone with some serious cutlery but this is a fantastic set for $60. I paid $80 for the first set and thought they were a deal at that price so $60 is a steal. We're both very happy with them.

No, the block consists of a piece of acacia wood with a piece of acrylic on either side allowing the knives to slide between the wood and acrylic to be on display while stored.

All knifes are dishwasher safe if you just don't care.

Seriously though, anything wooden shouldn't go through the dishwasher very often or it will dry and crack eventually from the wet/heat, wet/heat cycles. Anything steel shouldn't be left wet (if you were thinking of letting it air dry) so put simply "not dishwasher safe".
You're right. I have a 34 year old set of low end, wooden handle, steak knives that have ALWAYS been run through the dishwasher. No longer my every day set, for 10 or so years. But the handles have cracked a bit. Not bad though for a $10 set.

Reviews are not that good. Also read some reviews on Amazon of other products of this brand, low rated. Seems like cheap Chinese knives that use the word German a lot, but are not German. What exactly is "German Stainless steel" that is made in China?
The recipe of the steel is German, but the execution is Chinese Smilie
Like anything else, Chinese made can be made perfect and even better than other origin, they have the tech and people to do that, they just choose not to. It is more profitable to use 99% cheaper material and sell it for 75% discount of the real thing. Not bashing on China particularly, this is called "globalization" Smilie Smilie

I have this set originally from Crate and Barrel. It is definitely magnetized and has two pieces of acrylic that helps hold your knives also. The magnets are more for orientation (you can "lock" your knives into specific places) but it's not strong enough to hold the knife by itself. Keeps things tidy and neat.

3 knives, you only need three knives. Carving, paring, bread
I'm assuming that means you're doing ALL your veggie chopping with the paring knife? Woof

They don't choose, it is the American companies and consumers that choose not to.

Back to the topic, I ordered these a week ago based on the other thread and the
knives are pretty sharp out of the box. Haven't used them yet though.
Also, the wood handles need to be oiled with mineral oil for longer life/avoid cracking.

I believe the higher carbon content in better knives is better for the edge, but rust more easily. Leaving it in the dishwasher basically submerges it in a damp environment for a longish time.
Never let quality knives stay wet. Kills your edge

I'm not too familiar with all the different types of knifes. Is there a good steak knife in this set?
