This is actually what they intend to do - people buying the product before is likely to buy the same type/brand product. If you don't give the incentive, why do they upgrade? Amazon couldn't care less whether you send trade in or not. Not trading in means more devices in use which translate into more revenue or more data. For a $5 dot or $25 echo trade in, Amazon actually loses money. I view this discount more like the car manufactor's loyalty discount.
Basically, if you trade in a device worth $5 (echo dot), they give you 25% off + a $5 gift card. If you never send in the echo dot, they will charge you for the $5 gift card but either way you still keep the 25% discount.

1. Need good lighting, otherwise the "following" doesn't work and a message is displayed on the screen about low lighting. I wouldn't recommend keeping under a kitchen counter.
2. I don't like how constant Amazon spam is displayed about new shows or headline news. This is my first time using an echo with screen, so it was news to me. I usually yell "Alexa show my photos" to just see a never ending slide show of my photos.
3. Cool you can watch YouTube videos straight from the device, but screen quality is pretty bad IMO. Great sound though
