I real woodworker might consider that the tensile strength of steel is needed to make something as cheaply, compactly and efficient as possible. A real woodworker realizes that wood is not the one and only thing things can be made of. A real woodworker may want to put his woodworking efforts to something nicer than a storage rack.
If you have this much wood/lumber u might be rich.
Last time these were this price they got 62 thumbs up. For this price it's far cheaper to buy these than try to build anything with today's lumber prices!

Anyone has recommendation home made lumber rack vs this one ?
Base on the lumber price I guess I can save like $15 for material....
Also do you recommend buying one pair or two ? I'm worrying about warping. Mainly put 8feet lumber on it through.
There is no way to make a homemade rack as compact as this one. At a minimum you are going to need to use 2X4 on edge as the supports. To get six shelves the shelves themselves will eat up will take 21" of vertical space that will not be usable for storage. In comparison the Bora shelves only eat up 6" of space. To get the same storage space you would have to scale the height of a 2X4 made shelf up to 5' versus the Bora 41" Believe me I considered various way of going about it and this is just the cheapest and easiest way to go. It uses all vertical available storage space as efficiently as you can. Anything built of wood is going to eat up that space quick.

One pair is plenty for 8' foot boards you can space them at anywhere between 4 to 6 foot. Even spaced at 4' you will not have bowing issues. 2' hanging over the edge is not going to cause bowing and the 4' between is not going to allow sag of material 1X and up

This would be great if one could afford to store any lumber. I wonder if they are having a hard time selling saws nails screws and hammers. Or has the price for hammers skyrocketed also.

Oh boy this is gold advice. I ordered one already, was thinking if need to buy another pair.

600lbs is a surprisingly small amount of lumber.

That's 36 8 foot 2x6s for example.
You are right lumber weight adds up quick and I am well over the recommended but things are holding up fine. Quick calculation shows that a 8' - 1X12 is about 20 lbs

I can squeeze 10 pieces of 1X material on one shelf. On some shelves that has me having ten 1X8s along with ten 1X6s on one individual shelf. The lumber hangs over a little but stores fine that way. If my math is right that is well over 200 per shelf and with me having the whole packed to the gills I am hanging somewhere between 1000 to 1200 pounds on the rack with no signs of any stability failures or problems.

I can tell you that I would not do that with some of the stamped steel brackets that people are recommending. I have had them fail in many occasions with not much weight on them

At $1.40 each, no thanks, I'll pass.
A 1/4"x4" Powerlag screw is about $0.40 each will work fine.

I see that and you are correct. I did see them but figured they be about the same cost and had no idea that they were selling them individually. Thanks for the info.

lumber prices are going to crash in MAY according to Forbes

Ha! Definitely not May 2021. Prices will only rise thru this building season. Might show some decline in the Fall but likely no real reprieve until 2023.

The price of lumber is up 193%—and about to spike even higher. By Lance Lambert, April 13, 2021 5:15 AM EDT

I built this several years ago. I'm sure I got the general plans from somewhere on the 'net, modified to add further strength.

If you want more details on build and such, I can provide that.

I was hoping to fit two boards on each shelf, base to base. We'll see. Maybe shifting them left/right so the bindings facing each other interlock.

I do use those wall mounts to display boards, but I'm looking for something more for storage and keeping the boards out of the way in the off-season. I work at Burton in VT, so I can get those mounts at a pretty good discount. Wink

There is a small screw that the shelf rests on, but it's mostly the slight upward angle that when weighted holds the bar in place. So by just drilling a new hole for the set screw, you can make any shelf spacing you desire.

You can make your own rack from a single 2x4 8ft (which used to cost $2-$3 each). Each rack is triangle, which means it can support 100lbs per screw, so if you distribute across 2 or 3 triangular rack which contains multiple screws, this far exceeds what this thing can handle. Or just get some metal structural L brackets from HD for a few bucks, this storage rack seems like a huge waste of money.

Imagine 2 pegs sticking off the wall (bottom pegs on each rack) and hanging your ladder between them. I think one of the pictures on amazon for this product even shows it.

I saw a DIY video with a ladder hanging from the bottom rung, loved the idea. Someone else mentioned in this thread. Still waiting to finish drywalling and painting in garage, then will hang the unit I bought... 4 months ago? Will grab another if local HD has them in stock so I can get 11% off on top of it.

the second image on Amazon literally shows a ladder hanging from the bottom shelf posts.
