Tempted to buy a roll for the shelf in the garage tough, because when you print money and rescores are finite, the rescores increase value inversely to the money printed.
FWIW, I've been in the building/architecture industry for decades and seen these prices go up and down with the market demand. The prices are high right now, but it's because the commercial demand for product and choke points in the supply chain (2018 tariff-related material shortages which have depleted domestic warehouse stock, Covid-related reductions in production capacity and shipping delays).

As for history - I can assure you they are still teaching it. Most people have simply forgotten (or never bothered to learn) what they were taught. And why would they - you get paid 100x as much for being pretty and popular as you do for being smart.
Why would you buy so many short rolls? You will wind up with much more waste at the end Cost you more per foot of actual used wire.

Currently at HD and Lowes 250' are $122 (was $105 last week and about $65 6months ago), so 50'@$27 are still more unless you need shorter lengths. Not sure who's responsible for this madness but if it's due inflation then those "relief" checks soon will barely cover few 2x4s and plywood sheets if that. On that note I wonder how much "wood" sheds will skyrocket in price as well.

When the government gives out free anything, no one can compete in a bidding war with the government. So since trillions of dollars are going to housing, we are out of houses and materials to build them.

Is there a deal on the soapbox that you're standing on? 😁

I share your opinions on wildly printing money, but I couldn't not joke about it

Lowes had it at $121 last week but HD was at $104, this week they "caught up"
The amount of demand or production might be one of the reasons as well as local stores NONE of them have 14/2 (I guess if you see mostly 15Amp breakers in new houses electrical panels it might explain it without looking inside the walls), 14/2 was $67 now $81 per 250' and I guess those $40-50 per roll make a huge difference in big construction (I'm sure they still have to use 12GA in some lines but will try to minimize them as much as building company can).

Bought this a few weeks ago at Lowe's for $53 then had a $10 off coupon. Thought I was smart! Will be returning my Lowe's one now. Also the 25' 12/2 is a solid price if you need a smaller roll. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Southwi...e/22573594
$16.97 vs Lowe's $29.48

Some can be picked up in store today vs the 50'

Check out your local want-ads as there's usually people selling extra from basement finishes where they only use half or less of rolls.

The cost increase is due to factories shutting down/slowing production in the beginning of the pandemic, assuming that construction would follow suit. Well, the opposite has happened. Construction has continued at the same or greater volume over the past year. Factories have yet to be able to catch up. Add to the the fact that 3 out of the 4 resin factories for the sheathing have literally been shut down due to hurricanes and then the big freeze in Texas, and it is easy to see how normal supply and demand will force the prices up to these sky-high levels. The same resin goes into many construction products - pvc for pipe, conduit, boxes, etc. All of these items are skyrocketing in price, and plummeting in availability right now. Factories that still producing are forced spread the wealth amongst the whole country in order try and keep people going. Fun times!

Wood is related to import issues from Canada, not inflation. Well, not mainly from inflation. Lol

Daaaaaang...I just picked up 250' roll maybe 2 months ago for ~$70-75. I only really needed about 45-50', but 5x for 2x the price (vs a 50' roll for ~35) I figured I'd use it eventually. Building projects are just insane at the moment.

Not likely. This will last over a long time. Builder won't stop as long as people are buying houses. They won't drop price unless people stop buying and neither will happen soon

I used to get 1000ft spools for 265 from Grainger. They can't get enough to stock now. Lowes and home depot will only sell 2 spools per customer. Buying 15 spools takes several trips to several stores all because of covid delays.

Lately, the material future of copper rise in the same rate as Bitcoin. That's why they adjust the copper wires price overnight, same speed as gasoline price goes up when cruel oil future rises. USD deflated 15% this year, if we print more it will deflate more. Biden limited oil production, so the gasoline price is expected to go up because we are using deflating USD to buy imported oil. Copper goes in the same trend. Material ETF is doing very well thus year.o
