Just some details on this model, as I've been in the market for a good 3070/Ryzen7 or 9 laptop lately. I ended up opting for a more mobile Asus Zephyrus G15 w/3070 and 5900HS, but the Omen 15 2021 refresh was very close to being my first pick.

Display - Good but basic. 144hz has become a standard for 1080p screens. The only disappointment with this display is that it maxes at 300 nits, which isn't too dim, but it's not impressive either. What many consider the minimum for gaming laptops in the $1000+ range.

Thermals - very, very good. The laptop hasn't changed much from the 2020 model, and has one of the best designed heatsink/fan setups in this range.

Memory - Two slots for user changeable SODIMMs on the bottom. Thankfully no soldered RAM here.

GPU - 3070 80w w/dynamic boost, so basically maxes out around 100w. Because the thermal system is good, it generally handles this well, and there are no reports that it thermal throttles. It won't beat bulkier 115-130w mobile 3070 laptops, but it will beat previous generation 2070 115w "Max-P" by 10-20% depending on the game.

CPU - The Ryzen 7 5800H is basically a stones throw away from the Ryzen 9's, within the top tier of current mobile CPUs. If gaming is what you desire, this is as good as you need for any game. The GPU is the real focus there however. Just like the Ryzen 9's, it's 8 core / 16 thread, it just has a lower max boost clock and base speed.

Storage - 2x NVMe M.2 slots, one on either side of the battery. Fairly standard in this class.

Battery - reports say battery life is similar to last year's model, so 5-7 hours battery life for general use, which is quite good for a 3070 laptop. Gaming as usual will drain the battery much faster, in 1-2 hours.

Aesthetics - a really professional looking laptop that can easily blend into an office. A big reason I nearly bought it.

Fans - when gaming or pushing it hard, the fans are on the higher side of average. Not bad, but very noticeable.

Great review of this model:

My only issue with most of these 30xx laptop deals is they seem to be getting rid of their garbage/so-so displays with only 300 nits brightness and only 1080p and there are no display upgrade options.

Where are the QHD(+) versions on these!

No, not if you're primary usage is for games. You won't notice enough of a difference for it to be really worth it IMO. If you really want it that badly check how much you can sell your existing laptop for first to see how much it would cost you to upgrade.

If you use your laptop for a lot of productivity and work that can make use of the Ryzen processor, though, then it may be worth the upgrade.

Thank you for this, will contact them with this new info and see if I cant just cancel the order. 2 months is too long to wait for a laptop with a 3060 that is low wattage.

THank you!
If you don't mind posting a follow-up on how that goes, it would be very much appreciated. Considering the same and would be good to know what worked and what didn't. Cheers.

FWIW, I'm seeing these prices when logging into my military associated account (created via ID.me). 3060 config $1106.99 and 3070 $1446.99.

I also see an option for a QHD screen (+160). I have old eyes in my old head, so that makes the type too small for me even with reading glasses.

The only thing I hate about the Asus Zephyrus G15 is it doesn't have a webcam. Asus started taking the webcams out of their gaming laptops to make the screen almost borderless. People are still working from home or gaming online so all laptops should have a webcam. It's 2021, they're not that expensive anymore!

The unforgivable fact about the Zephyrus in my opinion is the soldered RAM.

Can you clarify what you mean by "floppy"? Are you saying the lid/screen bends significantly when you open it with one finger? Is this only when you open the lid by pulling on it off center?

Any feedback on the quality of the hinges? Do they have a lot of flex when opening/closing the lid and is there risk of them cracking after a few months?
The hinges are tight, no problem. The display panel flexes a bit when I only lift it with one finger. I've open/closed mine no more than 20 times so I don't know if this becomes a bigger issue down the road.

After a bit of pushing they said: We can no longer cancel this right away, what I can do is to submit a cancellation request to cancel the order this is just a request, you will receive email confirmation with in 24-48 hours business hours once successfully cancelled.

But since it isnt going to ship until 5/10/2021 if even... I anticipate a cancellation request should be fine.

Every time this gets posted i think HP is just trolling me for my order 6 weeks ago that still hasn't shipped. (Not to mention the cancellation on the order before that.)

At least it's already paid for. :/

What was the original estimate? I'm guessing a month or so? 6 weeks is egregious.

If they refuse and you have an outstanding CC company (I have amex), you can cancel and they'll just refund you within 4 weeks typically. You haven't received goods or services and delayed multiple times = good enough reasons for the company to give you your money back.

It took me three online chats and two cancellation requests over 10 days or "24-48 hours" to hear back. And I never really heard back, I ran into a chat person who eventually got it done, and I got an email back in a couple of hours.

That's a beast! And a super good price.

Anyone have thoughts on cooling, throttling, and wattage of the 3070? I've been reading that you can't just go by the name of the video card anymore, because a low wattage card will be less powerful than a higher wattage lower end card...

Although I'd prefer these specs at 17" for hopefully a more efficient cooling system. I'd actually prefer a Legion with these specs, but who knows when Lenovo is going to get their stuff together...
the cooling is hit or miss, on gizmosliptech's review and justjosh's review(can easily find on youtube) the CPU was between 95-100C with very loud fans! It's also a max q 3070 that is 80w, with 20 watts of dynamic boost sadly. Would recommend waiting for legion 5 if you want much more power

During gaming, the fans are bad, just is what it is not a dealbreaker but that's the reality. Also, thermals are quite sketchy. justjosh's review and gizmosliptech's review(can find both on youtube just search their name, most recent vids) had both of their CPU's reaching 95-100C with loud fans that failed to compensate. 5800H runs substantially hotter than 4800H last year, I mean it's all around sketchy why were they running the 2060 at 115w last year along with full CPU power and now they tanked it all the way down to 80w base?(w/ 20w dynamic ofc)
