Lenovo are selling their "entry level" Threadripper Pro workstations with big discounts. The base machine is available for $1936, with an additional 5% off for students or teachers or anyone signing up for the business discount. This is about $1400 off the MSRP.
The 3945WX Threadripper is the lowest level of Threaderipper Pro, but it's a beast. It's performance in a lot gaming benchmarks sits between a 5600x and a 5900x. But it's the extensibility of these machines which is mind blowing. They can be upgraded to use 8 channels of memory and hold 2 TB of RAM. And if you really want to build an insane system leverage every extension, storage device and network add in card, the Threadripper Pros have 128 gen 4 PCIe lanes (that compares to just 20 PCIe lanes on a standard x570 motherboard).
$2K is a lot to drop on a new machine without a serious graphics card. And not top of line standalone CPU performance. But this is an insane machine to build from.

For the average Joe, I guess buying a 3900x or a 5900x might be more cost efficient.
Also maybe worth noting that a new threadripper is due out later. This year. This may cause TR40 price drops.
The computer was faulty and it took seven months of constantly calling them to get them to honor the 30-money back guarantee. After I finally received the RMA and returned the computer they didn't refund they money. I'm still trying to get the money back. I bought the computer last September.
The customer service is by far the worst I have ever experienced.
Don't buy! If you do, just cross your fingers you don't need to return the computer or for any reason need to call customer service.
