X3d chips would be better. This is more toward productivity but it isn't a slouch when gaming

True for now and probably for quite some time but us old timers saw how 2 cores beat 1 core and 4 cores beat 2 cores. It is only a matter of time till 6-8 cores won't be enough...granted probably a good long time. Wink

X3D processors make more of a difference in 1080p and 1440p, as your GPU is likely to be the bottleneck in 4K, unless you have like a 4090.

I have a 5900x and a Radeon 7900XT and it still puts in work at 4K. I probably won't upgrade until the Ryzen 9000s are a generation old.

It was the best gaming CPU before the 5800X3D came out. In most gaming situations it's slower than the X3D, but RTS and some gaming workloads it's faster.

I'm a wedding photographer looking to upgrade to a new PC soon, as it's been 10 years since my last PC build, and things have changed considerably since then 😬. I process and export thousands of photos in Adobe Lightroom and need a solid, but not top-of-the-line, PC that can handle the workload without lagging behind like it is right now. I'm currently working with an Intel i5-3570k 3.4ghz quad core cpu, gigabyte Z77-DS3H mobo, 16GB DDR3 800mhz RAM, and an Nvidia GT1030 GPU, for what it's worth. I'm not a gamer.

Could any of you remarkably knowledgeable folks help me out and recommend a motherboard / processor / RAM / GPU combo that would be ideal for a photography workflow? I'm leaning toward AMD because I'm a bang-for-your-buck kind of guy and don't need top tier components, just a really solid setup that won't bog down when I'm editing. There are so many different levels and models of processors, I'm not sure exactly which specific one is best for my needs. I'm also open to buying someone's used rig if it fits the bill and they're wanting to upgrade themselves! I appreciate the help in advance!

3.5 years ago, I moved from an i7-3770k build to a Ryzen 7 3700x build. I got into photography 2 years ago and the 3700x is plenty good for Photoshop and Lightroom and even video editing with Davinci Resolve. But a few months ago, I upgraded to the 5900x when it was $280 and it's been awesome, especially with more and more computational features being added by Adobe, such as de-noise, upscaling, and AI-powered object removal.

You can get 32GB of DDR4 RAM for $60 or less, and if you can find a good deal on an AMD AM4 motherboard (I got mine used) and pair it with this Ryzen 9 5900x CPU, you'll get great results for pretty cheap. I also have my 3700x to sell if you're interested haha.

You won't have much of an upgrade path, though, as AM4 socket has now been replaced by AM5, and DDR5 RAM is the new standard. If you want to spend some more money, or want to future proof as much as possible (honestly doesn't mean too much if you're just going to keep the same PC for many years again), you can't really go wrong with any of the newer AMD or Intel chips.

AMD will be releasing their new 9000 series Zen 5 CPUs next month, so you could wait until the current gen 7000 series Zen 4 CPUs drop in price - but then you will be buying a more expensive AM5 socket motherboard and you should be buying more expensive DDR5 RAM.

This chip undervolts like a champ with very little performance drop, if any if done right.

I've got mine set to 1.21 volts with all cores at 4.6ghz and it's been rock solid for the past two and half years.

Runs cool, is power efficient and strong enough for whatever you throw at it.

I'd do $90 including shipping...about what I could get on eBay after fees. I have the RGB stock cooler too.
