Is this worth an upgrade from a 3900x if I want to keep my same computer for the next 2-3 years? I do gaming and light 4k video editing. Also, anyone foresee this price dropping even further?

Depends on your outlook. In two years are you building a new PC? Or are you just wanting to make sure your PC will last another two years at least. If you're fine with your 3900x performance then stay your course. If you feel like it's a little sluggish the 5900x is definitely better suited for that task. If your performance is great, then save up and wait two years when you decide to invest into a new set-up.

I upgraded from the 3900x to the 5900x and its been great.
In my case I bought a newer video card and needed something a little stronger without switching to a new system.

For your use it would be a good level up, or the 5950x if you can score for a decent price.

The price will only go down. The AM4 socket is no spring chicken at this point.

Single core performance is significantly better than ryzen 3000 series so it would be a nice upgrade for the price for games and other applications. But keep in mind this cpu is regularly 320-330$

And I personally wouldn't recommend upgrading to ryzen AM5 anytime. Knowing AMD they will probably go through 3-4 generations of motherboards and CPUs on that socket. AMD is really good at milking a platform and right now ryzen 7000 is still first gen of that platform and there's been quite a few bugs. I would personally wait till 2nd or 3rd gen AM5 before upgrading.

That means by the time you may want to upgrade down the road there will be a newer more polished platform to upgrade to.

So the 5900x is a nice upgrade right now.

They didn't drop the price quickly enough on these. Now it's old stock with a new gen already established.
