It's been a while since I've built, would it be worth upgrading from a AMD Ryzen 7 2700X?

Depends on what you're doing. For multitasking & office productivity, the Ryzen 5900X is much better than the 2700X. However, the Ryzen 5700X3D is sort of better than the Ryzen 5900X for video games, & the 5700X3D could cost a lot less (depends on exact discount). Both the 5900X & 5700X3D are much better for games than the 2700X.

Obviously, your GPU matters even more for games.

The 2700X, 5700X3D, & 5900X all use the AM4 CPU-motherboard socket. The Ryzen 7000 series use the AM5 socket. AMD should be debuting its Ryzen 9000 series this 2024 during summer to winter. In the next couple of months, AMD should also release the Ryzen 5800XT & 5900XT, which are improvements to the original Ryzen 5800X & 5900X --- exact details are tentative & subject to change.

In short ...... it would be a big upgrade from a 2700x . I started my first Ryzen rig with a 2700x , then straight to a 5900x when it was released , never looked back and still running my 5900x today with a 7900xtx ( Sapphire Nitro+ ) and I play in EyeInfinity w/3 Untrawides monitors (10320x1440) , no problems . ~ Ive owned this system for almost 4 yrs now but will be upgrading within a year I figure , not that I really need to at this point but 4+ years is about my personal limit for my gaming rigs (depending on how technology is progressing) . The new 9000 series looks good enough for me to upgrade , but in no real hurry to do so . ~

If you plan to keep your current rig for a while (depending also on the mobo your using) , then yes a 5900x would be a very nice/faily big uplift and very capable for another 2-3 more years easily (depending on your usage). ~ But if you need to buy another mobo (to get the most out of the 5900x) such as a x570/x570s , then you may want to go with a newer Ryzen AM5 series .
