If you want to game, it's better to spend the extra $50 on the $600 HP that Walmart has.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Pav.../943933730

They are a Ryzen 3500 (6-core) with a GTS 1650 Super. A 1650 Super is roughly twice the graphical performance of a 5700G.

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Com...5260vs4058

It looks like Walmart's website sells out of these very quickly and only 3rd party sellers are listed there. But if you can find them at your local store they are sold for $599.

This is why it's called a desktop.

I just bought it and opened it up, definitely a 180 watt PSU. Other than that, seems not bad so far but the wifi driver is not loaded initially, you have to manually install that to get Wifi.

I picked one up today. One weird thing, I don't know whether it's good or bad, is that the motherboard has CPU cooler mounting holes in a square pattern like Intel instead of the rectangle pattern AMD uses. I was going to drop in an AMD Wraith Spire I had and it didn't line up.

It's a good value but still so gimped. Let us buy 5700G's alone!

4700G has 8 MB of L3 cache, and each core can only access 4 MB because it is split into two core complexes.

5700G has 16 MB of L3 cache, and each core can access the full 16 MB.

That's a huge improvement, and I don't think anyone will miss that extra cache. Upgrading to dual-channel RAM is obviously a good idea, although I wouldn't even bother buying a kit.

Probably, but you won't want another one for years.
Correct, plus there's an IPC increase from being monolithic die. There really isn't a performance reduction from full desktop CPU (other than clocks).

I find the price pretty meh, though. I built one for a friend with 1TB nvme, 2TB hdd, 32GB ram, beefy PSU (for funsies), asrock b550, etc for 600. But I'm a specialist of a certain persuasion.

yes. the 5700G has 2 more cores than the 5600x so it's more like a gimped 5800x. I'd say it'll be as fast as the 5600x in most tasks and faster if it's a highly threaded task.
X just means they can be overclocked are performance series. G means they have onboard graphics.

You see the G series on lower end desktops so the manufacturers can cheap out and not require a graphics card. The onboard chipset has Radeon and instructions for decent graphics....the processor is still solid. You can add your own graphics card and you're set.

This CPU will be PLENTY fast for most educational projects. And with the GPU shortage, the integrated graphics on this will at least let someone limp by on low-medium gaming settings until GPU's become available again.

16gb MAY become a problem eventually, but it is enough to start. I like the fact that it's a 1x16gb stick so I assume that expansion to 32gb is easy.
16 is the new 4!

Got it. I am new to mining and I am not familiar with coins..so do you think it is not a good idea to buy this desktop for mining ?
No, you need an exceptional deal on 3700x or bigger Ryzen system or score an amazing deal on a used Ryzen 3900x - 3950x CPU (think Offerup, Craigslist and ebay) and build it yourself as there are not many prebuilds with these behemoths.. The proceeds are in $1-$3 a day range so you have to spend as little as possible.

Couple of days ago ebay had a certified refurbished HP computer with 3700x CPU and 2 year warranty for less than $500 after 15% mothers day coupon - that was somewhat interesting

Try mining on CPU you already own before sinking any money into it.

You can get the cpu. And put it into a real motherboard. Your left with a single stick of ddr4 of some unknown brand and 257gb ssd and a useless proprietary motherboard and tower.

Unless you can get your hands on a 3200 G or 3400 G really cheap and put it back in the tower and resell the tower I don't know if it's worth it to go that route just for the processor

so this desktop cannot mine at all?
CAN it mine, yes, but not very profitably, and your ROI would be very slow. A dedicated GPU would be much more efficient, but also much harder to find right now

hey for anyone that buys it... remember to buy another stick of ram

your igpu will be gimped as hell if you don't have the pc setup for dual-channel mode

About 20 percent slower? Is there a number to describe performance gain with 2 sticks vs 1?

It always grinds my gears when computers such as this one have a decent intergrated graphics processor but then knee cap it with single channel memory. Like seriously, they could have done 2 8GB sticks and get that memory bandwidth where it needs to be.

Just to note as it is mentioned: The PSU is a 310w Gold unit. So this is only rated for 87% efficiency at full load, or just 270 watts. The CPU is 65w. So yeah, a 200watt GPU is NOT gonna work. Even a 150watt GPU might push it. That only leaves 55w for the motherboard, memory, ram, disc drive and anything else you plug into it. I wouldn't go any higher than ~125watts myself.

You are better off getting the Dell XPS 8940 when it goes on sale if you want to game.
I understand it's a 180W unit in this one.

That means it supplies 180W to the pc - so might use 225w or so at the wall.

With 180w, that doesn't leave much for a GPU above say a 1650.

Way more.

In the below video it is a Ryzen 3200G. It is still an 8CU graphics chip like the one found in the 5700G, but the 5700G graphics is clocked 750MHz higher so it will be even more apparent. Here, the 3200G can see upwards of +100% increase in performance going from 1 stick to 2 sticks.
