looking better for $420 vs $450. The 5800x exists (and the 5700x DOESN'T exist) entirely to raise AMD's average selling price. The 800 cpus are almost always a terrible value when a 700 8 core cpu exists. Not only did AMD raise prices with the 5000 series, they also removed the coolers from all but the 5600x, adding another $40+ to anyone who didn't already have one.

The 5800 is a great CPU, but the non-existent 5700, 5700x and 5800 all would have been much better value, and for that I will always hate it.

At $450, the jump to the 5900x and its 12 cores is relatively small (+$100), and I'm almost certain that was AMD's intent.

IMO, msrp should have been $400 (even if it sold for more because of supply v demand issues).

Also- as a Zen 3 owner, if I were in the market to build a new pc and didn't already have a compatible zen 3 motherboard, I'd be real tempted to go Intel right now. Gen 10 prices are pretty damn good and a total system build price would likely be lower than comparable quality AMD. Similar-enough performance and readily available. If you don't mind the 2x power usage

edited to fix a mistake about the 5800x's msrp
No it doesnt have overhearting issues. It doesn't come with a cpu cooler so you have to buy your own and if people aren't smart enough to put one on there then I suppose it CAN overheat (please put CPU coolers on).
Early on there was some issues. I believe a mixture of bios updates and people under volting them has fixed the issue. AMD was pushing too high voltage when they first launched.

Once properly setup, this thing is a beast and runs much cooler than Intel.

5900x back to $549.99 on microcenter website must of got contacted by AMD.
AMD doesn't require microcenter (or any of its retailers) to charge MSRP. Just a suggested price.

I have the same dilemma but I think I'll wait until price will drop to $400 or below

Microcenter has become a scalper. They are currently listing the 5900x with an MSRP of $799 and are offering at a "sale" price of $699. They used to sell this cpu at the right MSRP of $549 just a few weeks ago.
You probably heard they adjusted the prices back down a few hours ago, except for the 5600X which is holding above MSRP at $350.

Micro Center adjusts prices frequently, sometimes within 24 hours. I wouldn't make too much of their brief "scalper" prices. Now they have 25+ of 5950X, 5900X, and 5800X at or below MSRP at multiple stores, which is a first.

There were a lot of people complaining about this in their user forum. I wonder if that made a difference.

Thank you for the heads up. I'll see if I can pick one up👍

Doesn't this turd have overheat problems?
Quote from Cgrovatt :
It runs hotter, I'm using a wraith prism on it for now and it's sitting 75 max in gaming. If it were under full load it would be in the 80s, but still a safe operating temperature.
Actually under a full load stress test, Tom's Hardware verified that the 5800X will hit its maximum allowed temperature of 90°C and near its PPT limit of 142W while using a 280mm Corsair H115i.

Source: https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...3-review/2

Edit: "the voltage of the 5800X is a lot higher than the other processors, and this is forcing higher thermals – we were measuring 90ºC at full load after 30 seconds (compared to 73ºC on the 5600X or 64ºC on the 5950X), which might be stunting the frequency here."

This is on an early version of bios and stock voltage. Both are easily fixed. If you look up people who have done so, it runs nice and cool like the other processors. Full load ~75c on moderate cooling.

For $100 more, you can have 50% more cores. My local store in Tustin had a bunch of 5900xs and I bought one last night at MSRP.

With Video Card still hard to get (or people don't want to pay more than MSRP) and AMD next gen (Zen 4) coming next year 2021 with 5nm TSMC process, DDR5 memory, PCI-Express Gen 5, USB 4.0, etc, many people are start thinking about building it next year instead.

I heard most likely AMD Zen 4 will switch to a new socket type (AM5(?)) so may need different motherboard.... May not be good time to invest in AM4 motherboard right now especially with the shortage of video card.

Zen4 will definitely be a new socket but it won't launch until end of 2022.

There's always something new coming down the pike in a year or two. If you need to upgrade, do it now and enjoy - assuming you can get the parts you need. If you can wait, wait. That's always the case. Nothing special about ddr5 or a new socket. That's the case every few years.
