looking better for $420 vs $450. The 5800x exists (and the 5700x DOESN'T exist) entirely to raise AMD's average selling price. The 800 cpus are almost always a terrible value when a 700 8 core cpu exists. Not only did AMD raise prices with the 5000 series, they also removed the coolers from all but the 5600x, adding another $40+ to anyone who didn't already have one.

The 5800 is a great CPU, but the non-existent 5700, 5700x and 5800 all would have been much better value, and for that I will always hate it.

At $450, the jump to the 5900x and its 12 cores is relatively small (+$100), and I'm almost certain that was AMD's intent.

IMO, msrp should have been $400 (even if it sold for more because of supply v demand issues).

Also- as a Zen 3 owner, if I were in the market to build a new pc and didn't already have a compatible zen 3 motherboard, I'd be real tempted to go Intel right now. Gen 10 prices are pretty damn good and a total system build price would likely be lower than comparable quality AMD. Similar-enough performance and readily available. If you don't mind the 2x power usage

edited to fix a mistake about the 5800x's msrp
No it doesnt have overhearting issues. It doesn't come with a cpu cooler so you have to buy your own and if people aren't smart enough to put one on there then I suppose it CAN overheat (please put CPU coolers on).
Early on there was some issues. I believe a mixture of bios updates and people under volting them has fixed the issue. AMD was pushing too high voltage when they first launched.

Once properly setup, this thing is a beast and runs much cooler than Intel.

For $100 more, you can have 50% more cores. My local store in Tustin had a bunch of 5900xs and I bought one last night at MSRP.
If you can get this for $400, it's a fine deal. That makes the 5900x 38% more for 50% more cores, but the 5800x is slightly faster per core since it's a single ccx, so it's pretty competitive at $400.

For sure, a few weeks ago you could get a i7 10700K for $250 from Microcenter! I think Intel is actually the value per frame cpu of choice for now. Sure, maybe it does some blender benchmark a few seconds slower but overall they are great for what most need them for.

A few people have by combining offers - 420$ plus cash back or random coupons from bb or others.

That's precisely what I just did. Ended up being just above $95 more than a 5600X with tax.

I switched from Intel to AMD for the first time in decades and was really happy with the change. Intel has seemed to give up on innovating and improving performance. 11900k is actually worse than the previous generation for gaming in most games.

If you play modern games, VR, or do 3d work AMD seems to have won out this year. If you don't game much and just casually use a computer, Intel is a really good value.

IBM Unveils World's First 2nm Chip with Nanosheet Tech, Intel and Samsung to Benefit.
.....
IBM no longer mass-produces processors; instead, it helps develop technology for its partners, like Intel and Samsung. The former recently announced that it would research new process node and packaging technologies with IBM as part of its new IDM 2.0 initiative. That means that Intel's future 2nm chips could be based on some of these IBM breakthroughs, and there are plenty.

Versus what? It's maybe a few dollars high, but nothing too much... $400 is the right price for this versus the competition.

Sounds like IBM innovating and Intel is just paying to use the technology some day. 2nm is still years and years out. 5nm isn't even coming until next year which will be used for a few years.

If you really think you will end up waiting that long anyways, go to EVGA right now and sign up to get auto-notified on all GPUs you might want. Yeah, it took basically 7 months (signed up last 10/29, according to my emails), but yesterday I got to order a 3070 without having to fight with the web site.
Thanks for the tip. I'm auto notify one one now.

Really not a question of feeling. The Intel competition is the 10850/10900k, which goes for ~400+. But this is far more power efficient and cheaper to run over it's lifetime, so honestly the Intel should be 375 or so.
