Seeing a lot of unhappy people that are being forced to replace toner cartridges after far less sheets printed than quoted. When one runs "out", entire printer is disabled, even if the "empty" one has lots of toner left in it.

Agreed. Seems like all the printer manufacturers are also moving towards forcing customers to use their wildly overpriced OEM consumables, through "chip" trickery. I made sure that my most recent printer purchase uses the older Brother TN630/TN660 cartridges, which don't have any of that nonsense.

Man that sucks, I'm moving away from HP because a recent firmware update made my aftermarket toner obsolete, I thought brother was a little better about things like that. Is that not the case?

I've gathered that the newer Brothers that use TN730/TN760 cartridges are "chipped" now, limiting non-OEM consumable use. But don't quote me on that; please check it out for yourself when shopping. And I've seen several people write that disabling firmware updates is a wise thing to do, to eliminate manufacturers pulling these stunts once you own their printer.

I have the Brother MFC-L2710DW using an aftermarket TN760. It still works. Even did a test print just now. Last time I updated was less than a week ago.

So unless there was an update within the past week that disables the cartridge, it still works.

Apparently, the replacement cartridge mfrs are suggesting that the chips need to be removed from the empty oem cartridges and put into the generic cartridges in order for some of the chip-reading printers to accept the generic cartridges.

Seems like a little bit of a hassle and risk, but maybe there's enough savings to warrant it.

Yeah. Last time I was looking for a printer the #1 thing on my list was consumable costs so I ended up with a Brother L2540DW and the sub $10 toner carts are wonderful. I'm on my 3rd or 4th toner cart and with a couple cases of paper left from when they were still FAR or MM I can print as much as I want without worrying about the costs.

I used to work for a printer manufacturer in the firmware division. We developed a "calibration" routine that, every time it turned on, it would purposely dump toner in the waste basket.

If you just turn it on and off over and over, it would eventually say "out of toner" and you wouldn't have printed one page.

I left the company because of crap like this, and now so many companies are doing it.
