I got in on this deal the last time it popped up. We're still on the original cartridges and we've not had the chance to see if after-market cartridges are any good, but I sure hope so.

This device DOES NOT have duplex scanning abilities and you have to flip your page over like a peasant if you want to scan both sides. We scan once every few weeks so it's not a hassle for us. But if you scan a lot, keep this in mind when purchasing.
What is the difference between this and MF644Cdw?

Edit
The 644 does duplex scanning, the 642 does not
Have this. I would suggest you make sure you install drivers from the website or CD for all units. Windows drivers work initially, but then can't reconnect. Don't know why. Works fine with official Canon drivers though.

I have a couple of the 644cdw. Overall they're fine. Print quality is good, prints both sides, cartridges last a while (but are expensive). A few issues:

1) I regularly print perforated Avery business cards (not to use as actual business cards, I have those printed professionally) but can't use this printer for that purpose because the sheets break apart in the printer. Doesn't happen with other Canon and Brother printers I have.
2) The document scan quality is terrible. Almost illegible. There may be a quality setting somewhere but I haven't been able to find it.
3) I have to turn the printer off and on before every scan, otherwise it won't detect my computer.

Super cheap aftermarket cartridges available https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Pack-C...890.l49286
Thanks for the link! Any idea if these will break the printer though? My experience is with Inkjets and cheap alternatives usually break the printer after a short period of time. I'm wondering if the "laser" printer won't have this issue... any input is appreciated!

For someone who owns this.....can you print in black when a color cartridge is empty or missing?

Was looking for a printer but I think I'll wait. Too many mixed reviews on this and I've personally had a bad experience with a canon printer...which is why I'm looking in the first place.
I was in the same boat and literally just bought a Brother HL-8260CDW this week. Really clean lines, and the color looks great, but the black has already started to fade after a week of use, which seems strange. But it's fast and holds a bunch of paper. We print about 150 pages a day of shipping labels and packing slips. Just another model you can consider as you're researching. We bought directly from Brother. Good luck!

How does this printer handle something like address labels? I have to print a couple hundred pages of them a year and so many printers either jam up or they get off kilter and print crooked.
I've had a lot of jams from the bypass tray using half sheet labels for USPS postage. They pull fine from the drawer though.

This printer is frustrating as it will always ask to pick which tray to pull the paper from. Why would it ask if the multi-purpose tray is empty???

Sounds like a config issue. Look at the paper/tray options. I have this printer, and never had such issue.

How is the price of the print cartridges?
I have one of these in my office. Works well with off brand toner for me. Full set of off brand with an extra black usually runs around $40-$60 depending on the deal I find at the time.

I agree with karma_joy. I have had mine for around 3 years and have not had this problem either.

Have you considered a Dymo label maker? Those are awesome and last forever.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think those would work for what we do. I do a mail merge thing on address labels with student data for a photographer. We do about 7000 labels worth over the course of a few months. My last laser, a Dell, was getting finicky with different label brands and the drum was starting to go. I had an HP laser at one point but had to feed each sheet by hand via the bypass paper feed. I have an HP ink jet now that is working ok, but I still am not crazy with ink jet vs laser thing even though it's working ok for now. I should probably just get a small, dependable b&w laser for the volume stuff and use the HP for scans and color prints.

Anyone have a tip to stop the nag warning during power up when the toner is low or empty message. I set the function to stop warning messages but the power up still gives a nag warning about quality even though the toner seems to have good print quality.

You can fax from Camscanner for like $1. Might be a good option to keep your data private.

I have this and have purchased cheap cartridges from Amazon. The color is very slightly different but is completely fine if you aren't printing photos. For reports and such it's absolutely fine for $50 all in vs the $200+ it would cost for official ink.

I love this printer.

I have the 642 which the scan quality actually is pretty good so I think you need to take a look at the settings.

Did you have the driver from Cannon installed? I had issues before I downloaded and installed the driver and the cannon printer manager or something, after that no issue at all.

Hi all. For anyone that has this printer already...do you know why it asks me every time (on printer itself) which tray to use prior to printing every job? So annoying, I tried everything already.

You need to take a look at the settings. For me when I use imac/iPad or even from phones it never asked. But when my wife prints from her surface book it ways asked to confirm tray. But after I deleted and reinstalled the driver it went away.
