  • The Display is 250 nits 45% NTSC (around 60% sRGB).
  • 4GB Ram is soldered and one Ram slot with 4GB Stick. You can replace that with a 32GB stick to get total 36GB or memory. 16GB mentioned is just the max Ram what Asus sells this model with.
  • In case you upgrade the Ram over 4GB, you will still get Dual Channel for 8GB (4GB soldered + 4GB portion of the Memory stick).
  • The Type-C port is 10 Gbps (Gen 2) but Data only. It doesn't support charging or Display Out

At this price, you won't get a 400 nits 100% sRGB display from any manufacturers and that's not really a downside for the price.
This one is far better in terms of CPU and Integrated GPU performance and far means really far far better CPU performance. The Display Quality is more or less same both. Acer one has a partial metal construct and Thunderbolt 3 vs mostly plastic construct of VivoBook. However, the build quality of this VivoBook Flip series is pretty good, despite being Plastic construct. My pick will be this one because of the far superior CPU performance and almost 2X GPU performance over the G1 Graphics in 1035G1.
It will be dual channel up to 8 GB. It's not ideal but going 12 GB doesn't mean you lose dual channel completely.

5500u is last year's zen 2 with a rebadge. Also watch out for 5300u and 5700u.

Not bad per say but should compare to deals on 4xxx series laptops.

Gimped by the soldered ram so only the first slot is expandable kicking you out of dual channel

250 nits

inaccurate color display

If you want all of those, it will be a $1000 plus laptop PC. This is a very good deal for its form and spec.

Does it mean that this has an extra ram slot to max out at 12?

Probably max out at 40 GB as that's how much the chipset support.

I'm really not understanding why laptop manufacturers insist on shipping with HDMI 1.4. You CAN'T do 4k @ 60 Hz through HDMI port if it's not HDMI 2.0 or later. You can only do it at 30 Hz. Unless you can output video through USB through an adapter and some USB ports cannot, you are stuck with 30 Hz. And even if you were able to use your USB port then why have HDMI at all? You might as well just not put the HDMI and put another USB port. 4K displays are not that rare these days.

And this model comes with HDMI 1.4 according to the spec.

You can put a 32gb ram and get total 36GB. However, only 8GB, 4GB soldered + 4GB of the 32GB module will run in dual channel.

I hear you. I think the main reason is to separate these budget laptops from their premium Laptops, like ZenBook series. Dell also uses HDMI 1.4 in their budget Inspiron 5000 series but at least their Type-C port is capable of DisplayPort 1.4 which can run 4K at 120 Hz. I think Asus should introduce DP support via Type-C Port in their VivoBook series.
