YMMV on this. Went to a local walmart to see about the Crucial 500gb external SSD, but they were out. Looked around and found these for $11.47. Reviews are actually pretty decent, and it looks like it contains an actual mSATA inside if you wanted to crack it and use it as an internal drive.
Brickseek didn't show them in stock at all at the store I was in, but here's the BS link anyway:

You got a pig in this fight?
Instead it has a direct connection to the USB-C. See the attached picture of the card.
It was on clearance for $26.
Thank you for the relevant information. I saw one of these in store for $26 but decided to pass. Had I seen this information I would not even have looked for it.

This was my experience as well!
On Amazon, the seller Emtec USA answers a question saying that an m.2 sata is inside, stated 3 weeks ago.
The description on amazon and emtec websites both state mSATA, as of today.
Reviewer Raviv has pictures of a torn-down / disassembled Emtec x200 in 512 GB capacity, showing an internal mSATA and mSATA to usb board inside. This review was completed back in 2019. Perhaps the 512 GB is different from the 256 in this regard, or perhaps they changed the design since 2019.
These are $20 at Amazon right now
