This is a mechanics set...

Were you planning to hammer and stab your Prius?
232 pieces and it only has 8 wrenches? Ridiculous.
Your kit has a massively inflated number due to the Allen wrenches and the bits. The above kit actually has a usable number of sockets.

The only one confused is yourself. You're the one that suggested that the set with the all important hex keys is better, and I pointed out how worthless they are. If you're a DIYer, you can get by just fine with a set of harbor freight Allen sockets for $15. Amazingly there are even ball end sockets. But of course you would prefer using the short side of the key and get almost no leverage. Even the page you posted didn't provide one example where a socket wouldn't work better. It's okay, they at least get paid by Irwin to shill their keys. Do you get the same?
You need to hit the gym more often if you can't get enough torque from hex keys and need a ratchet. I have no problem in having enough torque as the hex keys get plenty of torque power. You still fail to realize the importance of value and compact size. It isn't an accident that EVERY single mechanic set includes hex keys. It is a MUST tool. Great tool to add in the portable tool set bags. I have more than 1 tool set so "adding hex socket sets" to every tool set is absurd as it takes too much room, too expensive and adds extra weight.

If that is the case and you are limited in space why not use torx security keys. Can't you use torx in a hex socket? Something like this:

Mechanics will use a hammer all the time on things that are stuck or tapping stuff in or out of place:
  • Striking stuck nuts & bolts to break the rust bond.
  • Striking an old school manual impact driver to break something loose
  • Tapping cotter pins, roll pins and clips
  • Removing and replacing bearing races without a press
  • Striking all sorts of other stuck stuff like rotors (and adding wood block to avoid damage)
  • Hammering to flat or bend things in a vice like damaged brackets
  • Tapping a starter to free a stuck solenoid

Can we also talk about this Kobalt set that looks like it has quite a bit more for a little more money? Even though it's not on sale. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-2...1003095532

I actually have the Neiko hex set 13 piece each set in both metric and standard. I don't have torx keys but I also got the Neiko 10070A Torx Bit Socket and E-Torx Star Socket Set | 35-Piece Set..... I am a fan of Neiko sockets because they are solid value and highly rated. Craftsman was too much. I have no problem with Neiko or Harbor Freight. There is definitely good use for hex sockets but if I can do the job with the hex keys just as fast for a couple bolts, I will use the hex keys especially in tight spots. If I am putting up a gazebo that uses lot of hex bolts, I can skip both the hex keys/ratchet and use the hex socket with a drill or screw gun.

* I don't think I ever used tamper resistant bolts or tamper resistant keys before. I don't have tamper resistant star tools. I have torx and e-torx but no tamper resistant star tool. I see that being used on bathroom stalls in my gym so no one steals stuff. I am not worried about someone popping my car hood and stealing car parts. I do want to get tamper resistant bolts for my bike parts though but Home Depot doesn't carry those special bolts.

I am looking for sockets set only (no wrenches or screw bits), anyone have any idea which mechanic set to get for car repairs?
If all you want is sockets, then stop messing around with these general use "mechanic's sets" and look for "socket sets" instead.

I bought this about a year ago for similar price. For basic tasks it is great. I'm prone to lose my sockets, so the box was a big plus for me. Lug this bad boy next to me and most minor mechanical repairs are easy. Plus I can check the empty slots and make sure my little helpers have not borrowed my stuff. I'm a fan of the number of sockets in a small portable space. Worth the hundred bucks IMO. That is pretty much the same on all craftsman sets now 40-50% off is what you should pay, just have to wait for the sale.

So which is the best value and most usable kit?

I'm planning to gift it to my son who is beginning to have interest in tinkering with cars and stuff....

This one - Craftsman 232-pc
Amazon's DeWalt 205-pc
Home Depot's Husky 230-pc

All are $99 each currently.

A hammer is not something you would find in a set sold as a mechanics tool set.

Can most/all Craftsman tools be exchanged in the Lowes stores now?

Yeah, if they don't carry the specific tool you are trading in, they'll make you go to the web site to trade it in.

How do people get replacement and warranty on Craftsman tools now? Are there alternative stores that warranty that sell the Line?
I think if in stock either Lowes or Ace Hardware will replace.

How do we feel about this vs the husky set?

https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/644014

I purchased this set a couple weeks ago, and previously had the husky set before that until it was stolen out of my truck. I have to say the husky set was more complete and more overlapping sockets, especially deep sockets. I'm tempted to buy the husky set again and keep these as backups.

I would like to see you remove any Allen bolt that has been in there a while with your leverage only being the short side of the key. You must have some unbelievable finger strength.

You're right, it's not an accident many sets have Allen keys. They are a very cheap way to increase the tool count of the set.

How many more times do you need to post that ad link to earn your spiff?
