I purchased this last time it was on sale for $534. Decent laptop.
Nice screen, keyboard is somewhat annoying since it's gray and back lit. You would have to turn of the keyboard lights during daytime to see the letters properly.
Over all it is thin and light but the exterior shell is plastic not aluminum, which fooled me into thinking it was aluminum but I was surprised when I received it.
RAM is upgradable, I added another 8gb stick.
Here is a link to the RAM stick sold by Dell. It was on sale when I purchased it for $52 now its $77. You can find similar RAM for cheaper on Amazon. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/d...023/memory

all in all good purchase for the price but make sure you test it well during the 30 return period because Dells customer service is terrible.

Edit: even though you get a free 1 year of McAfee included in the price, Dell for some reason bill it on a separate line in the invoice. my invoice showed $37 line for McAfee. I called and requested for a refund, and after some haggling the rep refunded the McAfee charge. so I ended up paying less than $500 for the laptop. make sure you give this a try if you decide to go for it.

Most Ultrabooks don't have one since people tend to use wifi. Or you could use a $10 dongle to convert from USB to Ethernet

It's not about the $5 or being "cheap" - look at the profile pic of the laptop on the sides. It's barely bigger than the size of the USB port on the side. Including an ethernet port would probably make the sides 30% larger at least, and that is huge. Most newer ultrabooks don't have ethernet anymore either to help keep the profile as thin as possible, and you can spend $3,000 on one if you wanted.

And as someone else said, the amount of users that would actually use an ethernet port on a laptop 14" or under is probably under 5%. It's not a desktop replacement, and is designed for portability. I personally don't know what situation I'd ever plug in an ethernet to my laptop instead of using wifi. I could see doing that if you are buying a desktop replacement laptop, but not an ultra portable 14".

Well, apple does this kind of crap all the time. They remove CD slots, audio jacks, USB ports, etc. and then tell their ignorant users that they did it because it helps them. The gullible believe it even though they're being forced to pay additional money for extremely over priced port adapters. Apple is a cesspool of lies when it comes to this kind of thing.

These moves are just about increasing profits and every company is doing similar things today. Whether it's false bottoms in containers, smaller portions in the same size containers while increasing the price, jackets without inside pockets and/or sleeves lacking velcro strap adjustments, it's about the same thing... Money for the manufacturers...

We're living in an increasingly dumbed-down, greedy world with a race to the bottom. We are not better off than we were 20-30 years ago....

Are you sure about $30 in dell rewards? I bought the same laptop a month ago when it was $534 with $100 amex offer but those dell rewards just pending and yet to materialize. The issue with dell rewards is that it doesn't get awarded unless you spend $800 in a year and it expires if you don't spend that much within a year.
Dell is far from perfect, but i've been accruing Dell Rewards on other purchases this year. I used about $11 in rewards for this laptop as a matter of fact.

When you use Dell Financing, they double the rewards (6%), so that equates (according the checkout page) to $30. I have no doubt that I will receive them.

And, yes, they do expire, but Dell does email you to let you know in advance so you can spend them before they expire.

I guess you are dell preferred rewards customer or may be using dell financing because as per what i see, if i dont use dell financing, it says need to meet $800 in a year threshold before those rewards are actually awarded. Else, they go waste since they remain in pending status until a year and never really get awarded unless one spends $800 and above.

Ethernet port adds a minimum thickness restriction to the laptop. Whenever I am in the market for one, I look for those without one. Different schools of thought for different people.

For nicer laptop, they have expandable ethernet port that won't affect the thickness. So laptop thickness is not really an excuse for 14" or larger laptop if they really want to put it in.

What do you say to the Dell rep to get them to refund the McAfee amount? I tried and they said it's a bundle and they're applying a portion of the system amount to McAfee.

That's a standard answer that the dell representatives have been trained to repeat since a month this laptop has been on sale and people have reached out to dell customer support for Mcafee refund. So, many have tried varied approaches to get this refunded ranging from people threatening to return the laptop. But I had to be little more innovative once denied by three consecutive representatives.

So, here's what I did. I reached out to a dell representative and updated that I was promised a credit for Mcafee subscription as I couldn't cancel it while placing the order(which is true because there is no option to opt out while placing the order) and i had called a dell representative over phone(not mandatory but i did in my case). So, he repeated the same standard answer as above. Then I had to push him to connect me to a manager and repeat the same story. Even though he didn't approve the refund immeditately, he did log a ticket and the credit got approved after a week.

Give it a try and if it doesn't work try again. By the time you try it third of fourth time, you would have your approach figured out based on what works. I know it may seem like a lot of legwork but well worth it when you are a slickdealer.

Generally agree. The reduce the size and charge the same price trick is the one that is particularly egregious. Just look at orange juice. Used to be sold in 64 oz\2 qt containers. Now they sell it in 52 or 54 oz containers and charge approx the same price for it. Most people are too stupid to look at the unit price when shopping.

Just have a usb to ethernet adapter hooked up to your ethernet port at all times. $10 or less. Done. My wife's 13.3" Dell doesn't have ethernet, and I didn't realize it until 3 years later. What usage scenario would make ethernet needed on a low to mid-range laptop like this?

My 17" EVOO does, and the only reason I use it is because I thought the WIFI was having issues. Now that I have that cord there, I just plug it back in whenever I put the laptop on the desk. But I don't need it.

Now what I want to gripe about is the RAM. Still 8Gb? That would be my first upgrade, and the only thing my wife's laptop (almost 4 years old now) needs to make it keep up with these new ones for her use. It's a 7000 series 2-in-one with pen support, and it was $615 at Best Buy on sale. This computer should be cheaper in my opinion (since it is on sale), but I know prices are high overall right now. Every once in a while I think about buying her a new PC and she says it works great other than having to have it plugged in most of the time. So I put in a new battery for $20 or so and she has no complaints.

Edit: I just looked at the pictures of the side of the laptop posted, and I do think they could have included an ethernet port. But, it's really a rare-use scenario where a cheap laptop like this really needs ethernet. There are plenty of business or gaming laptops that will have ethernet.
Anyone that copies large files or large amounts of data from PC to PC or streams a lot of data over their home network will understand the usefulness of a wired connection. There is a reason people build a house with an ethernet drop in every room. Wired is always more reliable and almost always faster and it avoids issues with your router in general.

Anyone have any recommendations for a dock that makes use of the USB-C Alt Mode (DisplayPort) + power delivery?

This is not some cheap Chrome book type POS. $500+ i5 based laptop and they seriously expect people to buy some cheap usb to ethernet adapter to do what should have been built into the device in the first place and would have cost Dell all of probably $5 to include? It is lame by any measure imo. To each his own, but I do not see why anyone would buy such a thing.
I've got to be honest with you; you're WAY off of the mark. An incredibly tiny number of people use ethernet connections on laptops. They are inconvenient and offer little in terms of a speed advantage versus anything employing the 802.11ac or newer standards.

Only 8gb RAM? Thats not a deal.
I'll bet you 1000 dollars right now that you don't use anywhere near 8GB of RAM unless you're playing games, and this is not exactly a gaming machine. You would never know the difference if this laptop had 8GB or 100GB.
