I purchased this last time it was on sale for $534. Decent laptop.
Nice screen, keyboard is somewhat annoying since it's gray and back lit. You would have to turn of the keyboard lights during daytime to see the letters properly.
Over all it is thin and light but the exterior shell is plastic not aluminum, which fooled me into thinking it was aluminum but I was surprised when I received it.
RAM is upgradable, I added another 8gb stick.
Here is a link to the RAM stick sold by Dell. It was on sale when I purchased it for $52 now its $77. You can find similar RAM for cheaper on Amazon. https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/d...023/memory

all in all good purchase for the price but make sure you test it well during the 30 return period because Dells customer service is terrible.

Edit: even though you get a free 1 year of McAfee included in the price, Dell for some reason bill it on a separate line in the invoice. my invoice showed $37 line for McAfee. I called and requested for a refund, and after some haggling the rep refunded the McAfee charge. so I ended up paying less than $500 for the laptop. make sure you give this a try if you decide to go for it.

Most Ultrabooks don't have one since people tend to use wifi. Or you could use a $10 dongle to convert from USB to Ethernet

It's not about the $5 or being "cheap" - look at the profile pic of the laptop on the sides. It's barely bigger than the size of the USB port on the side. Including an ethernet port would probably make the sides 30% larger at least, and that is huge. Most newer ultrabooks don't have ethernet anymore either to help keep the profile as thin as possible, and you can spend $3,000 on one if you wanted.

And as someone else said, the amount of users that would actually use an ethernet port on a laptop 14" or under is probably under 5%. It's not a desktop replacement, and is designed for portability. I personally don't know what situation I'd ever plug in an ethernet to my laptop instead of using wifi. I could see doing that if you are buying a desktop replacement laptop, but not an ultra portable 14".

I've seen it on Dells page. But while removing the bottom cover (which is a one piece that covers the whole bottom) to upgrade the rams, one of the clips cracked because it's made of thin plastic. Maybe there are other parts that are aluminum, but the one peice that is protecting the whole bottom of the device is definitely plastic.
Top lid and palm rest are metal but the bottom is plastic as you've found out.

So my order confirmation shows that part of the total price is $35.96 for McAfee 12 months (which is garbage IMO and I would never use).

Anyone know how to get that $35.96 refunded from the purchase price? I probably need to wait until I have received it but wonder if anyone has ever tried it?
That's a known Dell strategy. I think it has something to do with their accounting purposes. I called Dell a couple of weeks after receiving it and after some haggling they refunded the charge. People had different experiences when attempting this so its a YMMV. Doesn't hurt to try.

At first subscribe and signup at Dell then wait for a coupon of first order at dell.
I already tried this and unfortunately the coupon does not work for this laptop.

No ethernet port = lame. Who in their right mind designs a computer with no ability to connect by ethernet?
Just have a usb to ethernet adapter hooked up to your ethernet port at all times. $10 or less. Done. My wife's 13.3" Dell doesn't have ethernet, and I didn't realize it until 3 years later. What usage scenario would make ethernet needed on a low to mid-range laptop like this?

My 17" EVOO does, and the only reason I use it is because I thought the WIFI was having issues. Now that I have that cord there, I just plug it back in whenever I put the laptop on the desk. But I don't need it.

Now what I want to gripe about is the RAM. Still 8Gb? That would be my first upgrade, and the only thing my wife's laptop (almost 4 years old now) needs to make it keep up with these new ones for her use. It's a 7000 series 2-in-one with pen support, and it was $615 at Best Buy on sale. This computer should be cheaper in my opinion (since it is on sale), but I know prices are high overall right now. Every once in a while I think about buying her a new PC and she says it works great other than having to have it plugged in most of the time. So I put in a new battery for $20 or so and she has no complaints.

Edit: I just looked at the pictures of the side of the laptop posted, and I do think they could have included an ethernet port. But, it's really a rare-use scenario where a cheap laptop like this really needs ethernet. There are plenty of business or gaming laptops that will have ethernet.

Saw this video of someone opening and upgrading it.

It's nice to know that you can upgrade ssd, and ram. It also looks like it has a spot for another ssd/nvme which is a killer feature if you're planning on storing tons of data. Not bad for only weighing 3.09 lbs.

I bought this laptop from the last deal. I had to sent the first one back as the touch pad was broken. I was impressed how fast it took Dell to send replacement. I installed another 16GB of memory...

How do you know the ram is upgradable with a second slot? I don't see that on the webpage.
Because my brother (who has this exact laptop) was able to.

Garbage. Don't buy. Bought a Dell Inspiron 5505 in December (looks like the same overall design, or very close to it). It has a design defect whereby the case doesn't adequately support the motherboard. After installing RAM and replacing the screwed, the screw left of the touchpad flexed the device enough to depress the touchpad's buttons. I eventually left that screw out, but the case still flexed because it's a bad design. I then had issues with random shut offs for 3 months until it finally bricked in mid Feb, 2021.

After the computer bricked, I had to call Dell approximately 20-25 times over two weeks, spending probably 15-20 hours, before giving up and disputing with my credit card. I was promised all sorts of things during that period, ranging from same-week replacement overnighted to me (after numerous demands, because I couldn't have a defective computer keep me out of work) to a refund. A month later, shortly before I expect the credit card dispute would be resolved, Dell finally refunded my money.

Due to work interruptions, buying a Dell cost a few thousand dollars, accounting for work interruptions, time invest in the resolution, etc. Never again. Went out and got an E14 Thinkpad. Very happy so far. $9XX.

This was the worst consumer experience of my life. Never again.

FFFFFF prices went up on RAM? It was already expensive on the sale price.

I think there are also two types of sticks on the 8GB, i.e. 1x16 and 1x8 chips per module.

Out of all the Dell preinstalled program, which one would have significant impact to performance or memory usage that people would uninstall right away? And which one probably ok to keep it around?
Download windows 10 debloater and run it using powershell and that should make your system 100% bloat free and improve the performance significantly. I do it on all my new windows devices and create a system restore at the point to ensure that i have the cleanest installation restore point if i ever need it in future

Note that the base frequency of this CPU is lower than 2.4 GHz (~1.2GHz iirc) because it runs at a lower TDP and this can't be changed in the BIOS.

Yes this model has the 1RX16. I doubt it'll make much difference if you got a crucial 1rx8 off of Amazon. Last I checked was $45 for the 8gb stick

I've bought this laptop in the past for a client and it's pretty nice, especially around this price point.

In for another one. Used 5% financing discount plus had $12 in rewards (and earned another $30 in rewards).

Thanks OP!

Does the financing discount need a hard inquiry on the credit report?
