If the sensor stops working can you not just disconnect the rod to manually lift the lid?

I believe there is a button to open it manually if the sensor was to ever quit working. They refer to a "manual" mode in the description. I don't have this particular model, but one like it, and it can be opened/closed manually by pushing buttons on the front panel.

Is there a removable inner bin?

Nope. You drop in a 13 gallon garbage bag and there's a ring that holds the bag in place when you snap the lid on.

It takes 2xD batteries ? Didn't know they still made that sizeโ€ฆ. I had one that took 8 AA batteries and needed changing almost monthly. The sensor has a slow drain as it's alway looking.

The motor runs off 1.5v, so I installed a buck converter and USB plug. I've stepped the 5v from USB down to that so I never have to replace the batteries.

I adjusted the voltage from 1.5 back up to 1.7v, and the motor opens faster and it's been super amazing.
How adjust voltage?

ALWAYS avoid sensor activated trash cans. They never work well for long.

Avoid.

I had my first one for 4 years. My replacement has been going strong 3 years.

I have one of those Rubbermaid roll top garbage cans I grabbed from one of my neighbor's office and that's best garbage can I have ever had. Flip the top back, throw stuff in, flip the top back down, done.

Even when they work, they're too slow to be very practical. We've tried several and just ended going right back to SimpleHuman step-activated cans. Quick, easy, durable, quiet, no batteries.

This seems like a good price, but my $0.02 is that I wouldn't take one for free.
I bought this ONE [walmart.com] last week for $41. The sensor works great and the lid action is smooth and quick.

I've been sticking with itouchless and those have been reliable for me. You can get good deals from Amazon warehouse like new condition now and then. This one and the ones they used to sell at Costco called Eko just stop working after a bit. The sensor just plain stops recognizing.

Bought this 4 months ago, the motor is dead already. I thought it was the batteries, but a fresh set of Energizers does the same thing: the lid lifts very slowly, and only halfway.

I will opt for the foot pedal types from now own. Sometimes too much tech is too much tech.

buck converter. It's a small PCB board that you'll need to solder in place, and it has a #1 philips adjustment on it.
