  • About this item:
    • This trash can operates with infrared motion sensor technology to allow you to simply wave your hand above the sensor at the front of the lid to open it automatically. The lid will remain open as long as there is an object in front of the sensor and close gently five seconds after the object is removed. If a hand or object breaks the infrared beam between the lid and the sensor while it's closing, re-triggering technology opens the lid again to prevent lid from closing on your hand.

It takes 2xD batteries ? Didn't know they still made that size…. I had one that took 8 AA batteries and needed changing almost monthly. The sensor has a slow drain as it's alway looking.

The motor runs off 1.5v, so I installed a buck converter and USB plug. I've stepped the 5v from USB down to that so I never have to replace the batteries.

I adjusted the voltage from 1.5 back up to 1.7v, and the motor opens faster and it's been super amazing.
How adjust voltage?

ALWAYS avoid sensor activated trash cans. They never work well for long.

Avoid.
I had my first one for 4 years. My replacement has been going strong 3 years.

I have one of those Rubbermaid roll top garbage cans I grabbed from one of my neighbor's office and that's best garbage can I have ever had. Flip the top back, throw stuff in, flip the top back down, done.

Even when they work, they're too slow to be very practical. We've tried several and just ended going right back to SimpleHuman step-activated cans. Quick, easy, durable, quiet, no batteries.

This seems like a good price, but my $0.02 is that I wouldn't take one for free.
I bought this ONE [walmart.com] last week for $41. The sensor works great and the lid action is smooth and quick.

I've been sticking with itouchless and those have been reliable for me. You can get good deals from Amazon warehouse like new condition now and then. This one and the ones they used to sell at Costco called Eko just stop working after a bit. The sensor just plain stops recognizing.

Bought this 4 months ago, the motor is dead already. I thought it was the batteries, but a fresh set of Energizers does the same thing: the lid lifts very slowly, and only halfway.

I will opt for the foot pedal types from now own. Sometimes too much tech is too much tech.

buck converter. It's a small PCB board that you'll need to solder in place, and it has a #1 philips adjustment on it.

How the heck did you do this i wanna try lol.

I got mine on clearance for $20 a few weeks ago.
So... I've got USB connectors [amazon.com] and a USB male to USB male cable sitting around, which would be step 1. I bought a variety pack [amazon.com] for building other things. It came with Micro, which would make a little more sense for most people without a male to male cable on hand.

You just need to find the USB pinout for 5v+ and ground. Those get soldered to a buck converter [amazon.com] (mine came pre-labeled + and - on the underside), which will accept incoming voltage, and adjusts down via a philips screw on the converters PCB. If you spring for the extra big ones [amazon.com], they have a little LCD screen on them that tells you the output voltage.

I soldered the output wires to the backside of the battery terminals. This allowed me to keep the PCB out of the way, and when I melted the window in the battery door, it sunk in the USB connector so it's actually out of the way of the batteries. I could unplug the USB from the back and run on batteries without any adjustments.

this is what I started with. it's a different model/voltage, and he uses a 6v DC power adapter, to match it up for his 6v model....a lot less work than USB, but not nearly as cool.
