Besides a lot faster, the electric hand planer is no different than using a manual hand planer for flattening a wide board. Not really the right tool, I doubt if you will get it right without a lot of practice..

But, using the right tool for your job, the electric hand belt sander, the standing drum sander, or even a thickness planer is the tool. Don't have those, an electric/pneumatic hand sander of whatever flavor and if no powered hand sander, then by hand with sandpaper.

The easiest and cheapest way? Use the appropriate paint stripper for polyurethane removal.

You would just have to take the guide off and do multiple passes.

Thanks for the reply. I have a random orbit sander, I'll just use that and work that coat off the piece. I guess I was hoping this could achieve the same result without having to spend all that time sanding. Glad I asked first! Thanks again.

I was looking into this one. I have to admit I'm a noob to planers. I'm assuming if I have stock wider than 4 inches I won't be able to use this correct? I have some old shelving that has a polyurethane coat on top that I want to remove. It's a 1x8 and I know I could sand it off but if this will do it for me. I might pull the trigger. Anyone have advice?

Wasn't part of HD deal; I tried. I just bought one for $49 + $7 shipping from DTO, "factory blemished", would probably have bought this instead.

The paint stripper is the best choice. After that is finished, light sanding might be required depending on what you are doing.
