noob huh? guess you are too young to remember, but it did all happen.. you had to have $$ in a account to get the full use of the "free" stuff.. Search Ring plus and freedom poop.. it is all in those threads.. And I did try to get the " text now" thing to work years ago with zero satisfaction.. I found out about it here.. "Fake"? Arg.. you did not look at my stats. I have 5yrs on you..

I have been here for over a decade.. I think I have seen it all at least 1 time before. If it works for you great. Maybe it is different with the T-Mobile GSM service, but I have my doubts. Lets see how it is going for the folks in a year.. I am just saying dont be sucked in paying money for a free service like I did with those 2 "free" services..
There was a totally free service though, (not to venture too far off topic).
The legendary Sprint BYOD Free year. Data included. Which turned into 3 years free for many.
So now I spend all my free time scouring the SD in search of something comparable.
Oh woe is me.

Well I do take Sunday's off though

Sprint service is not free. You have to pay fee and tax.

Tried to activate a Pixel 3a with it's T-Mobile SIM last week, and it still wanted me to upgrade the SIM for $5...

textnow is pretty good way to get a second number for whatever reason, especially if you mainly use it for text.

You could even use a PIN code to access the app for "whatever" reason.

Actually activating a sim is optional. You could just download the app on your existing phone, get a number, and use it to give out to people you don't want to give your main number to. It will use your phone's data for text and voip calls.

You will see ads interspersed between your texts messages (of course the recipients will never see it).

After you make a phone call, you will see like a 5-15 second ad on your screen that you can't X out of until it's done (unless you press the home button and exit the app altogether).

And yes, you can use textnow number for some verification codes. I used it for the Gpay Spring Stamp Promo and was able to get verification codes.

If you do use a sim card, you will get data on that phone for just the purpose of using the textnow app to make calls and texts. I did that on an old LG Volt (that I use to use for Ringplus) but ended up never using it on that phone and use the same account on my regular phone so I can have 2 numbers without using 2 phones.

I have never tried to use it for porting purpose.

I think it only works with Sprint sims. At least that's how it worked originally.

I said many times do not give money to ringplus. They will shut down service and you'll be left with nothing. But no one listened.

Only way these services are useful are for like visitors that just need service for a month or two. If you plan on using this long term, its a waste of money. Spend on something more reliable even if it costs more.

Few things are free, but I still have a free plan with FreeUp which gives me 250 minutes or text each month. I only had to pay $5 for their SIM back in Oct 2019.

So you can use this number anywhere even there is no wifi? For $5 I'd give it a try.

I already have a bunch of textnow numbers but I need to send at least one text message per number to keep them.
