You could even use a PIN code to access the app for "whatever" reason.
Actually activating a sim is optional. You could just download the app on your existing phone, get a number, and use it to give out to people you don't want to give your main number to. It will use your phone's data for text and voip calls.
You will see ads interspersed between your texts messages (of course the recipients will never see it).
After you make a phone call, you will see like a 5-15 second ad on your screen that you can't X out of until it's done (unless you press the home button and exit the app altogether).
And yes, you can use textnow number for some verification codes. I used it for the Gpay Spring Stamp Promo and was able to get verification codes.
If you do use a sim card, you will get data on that phone for just the purpose of using the textnow app to make calls and texts. I did that on an old LG Volt (that I use to use for Ringplus) but ended up never using it on that phone and use the same account on my regular phone so I can have 2 numbers without using 2 phones.
I have never tried to use it for porting purpose.
