Awesome head unit for the $105 price. Recently finished installing the head unit with a Metra wiring harness, mounted the mic, replaced the cigarette lighter with a USB port, updated the firmware, and wired a rear camera. I also ordered a PAC SWI-RC-1 steering wheel adapter to retain my steering wheel buttons. This unit sounds way better than the stock head unit it replaced.

Yup. Compare the sound between FM radio stations and the iHeartRadio app for the same stations. So much clearer.

How did the PAC steering wheel install go? Straight forward? I bought 4 of these head units. 1st one with camera installed successfully. Next 3 should be faster installs for me, but one of the cars has steering wheel control.

The PAC SWI-RC-1 should be arriving tomorrow afternoon and I'll probably install it sometime during the week. I'll let you know how the install went. I ordered the older model though since my steering wheel only has 6 buttons and it was only $28. The newer steering control model (PAC SWICP2) is double the price at $59 on Amazon.

This is a nice unit. The only thing that bugs me is the static sound. It's only gone when I mute but even on zero I hear it. I've unplugged the antenna and grounded the connection to the cars frame. The only other thing I can think of is plug the power straight to the power source. It's not a deal breaker but it would be nice to hear it clear. Static is on any feed.

No static sound for me. What did you use to connect the harnesses together? I used solder seal: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073RMRCC3

I used butt connectors. Never had an issue in the past. I'll undue it all when I get a chance and twist each pair of wire together and then black tape to see if I can find the culprit. If I find out it's the butt connectors then I'll go your route AlpineMan. Thanks for your feedback

Could someone please let me know where to connect the orange wire labeled as Illumination and what is it's purpose?

The orange wire should connect to the orange wire of your 3rd party harness. I'm assuming you're using a 3rd party harness and not cutting your vehicle's original harness. It just makes installs easy. I don't like cutting the car's original wires. Example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00009UHKW/

That harness is for select Toyota cars. As you can see the colors match the wire harness that comes with the Dual radio. Just match color for color in my example above. But I'm guessing not all 3rd party harness follow the same convention.

But to answer your question, illumination wire tells the radio when you've turned on your headlights to automatically put the radio in night mode.

If you want to bypass Park...yes, connect pink to ground. FYI, if you don't bypass park, there are limited things you can do in Android Auto unless you put your car's gear on Park. Not sure on the legality on this however, if you choose to bypass. So follow the law.

I finished installing the PAC SWI-RC-1 and it was much easier than expected. It gets more involved if you want to re-program your steering wheel buttons to do different tasks than what it was assigned at the factory. I stuck with the OEM steering wheel configuration which made it much easier. You configure the PAC SWI-RC-1 using dip switches that you can find on Pac's website. Then you connect the wires from the PAC SWI-RC-1 to the car's wiring harness. I only had a total of five wires to connect (two ground wires, a power wire, analog 1 wire, analog 2 wire, and the 3.5mm jack). The PAC SWI-RC-1 did not need any resistors to be wired unlike the older PAC SWI-RC.

I installed this last weekend. On the first drive, the navigation keeps freezing up when it tries to announce the direction over the playing music. If I press Home, it goes to the home screen, and then Android Auto starts again, then the navigation, then freeze again, it quite frustrating.
I updated the firmware of the unit, it freezes much less after that, still happens.
It seems to be very sensitive to the cable connection, Android Auto disconnects over a bump in the road. Changing cable improves it, still happens.
I also tried to connect a second phone, it's connected, but Android Auto won't start on the unit, even though on the phone it says it's started.

This feels like a plus and minus. I turned on the headlight during the day and the screen switches to night mode, making it hard to see.

This is a USB cable issue. I had similar experience until I replaced the USB cable.
