I've always eyed the dragon quest games but never jumped in.. anything major I'd be missing if this is the first one I play?

Nope! All dragon quests are independent story lines with completely different characters. I'm personally a little over halfway through the game and i highly recommend it.

Epic is trash. DQ11 is on sale on steam for $25 and I bought it there to avoid Epic and their terrible customer support.
