Completely off topic, but I recently got one of these fancy Rheem hybrid electric/heat pump water heaters off a SD post for maybe $850. Wow. In the summer it can basically air condition half my house.

My water heater is on the ground floor, with the main living space on 2nd floor and master on the 3rd. I program the timer to slowly increase the temperature throughout the day so the heat pump kicks on to soak up the heat of the day and cool my house. Also program the Nest thermostat to run just the house fan for 30 mins every hour and circulate.

Pretty awesome to power my house with solar, cool it in summer by heating water, then flushing excess heat down the drain when I shower or wash clothes. Should break even on the $850 purchase price in just 2-3 years.
Water heaters are cheap. Installation is a killer
Because it needs 2 people.
Electric would seem easier than gas to me for the plain install.
Plug and play as long as fitting replacement and expansion tank install are not needed?

I just replaced my gas hot water heater. With a second strong person, definitely needed the following dollies for removal and transport (from basement):
1. Regular dolly (removal of old cylindrical one) + ratchet straps
2. Appliance Dolly (transport of new boxed one to basement). Has built in straps.

My installation for the gas hot water heater was straight forward once we got it into the basement.
1. Place new pan where old pan was. (I needed a new pan as my old one leaked)
2. Remove hot water heater from box (cut around bottom and lift box off); hot water heater can stay on the cardboard base (to slide into place) until transfer onto the pan.
3. Lift hot water heater into pan.
4. Ensure gas line hose reaches fitting! Attach gas line hose to hot water heater.*
5. Attach venting for exhaust.
6. Screw on water line (cold to cold inlet; hot to hot outlet).*
7. Turn on main water line.
UPDATE: 8. Turn on hot water faucets to bleed air from tank and pipes before turning on pilot.
9. Turn on gas line.
10. Check for leaks (gas and water).
11. Light pilot.
12. Adjust setting to desired temperature.

*use appropriate pipe dope or teflon tape for water vs. gas lines (gas dope/tape containers are yellow).

UPDATE:
- added bleeding.
- Be sure to follow installation steps in the manual.

Well, they were clearing them out. The 50 and 40 gal is already out of stock from your link.

Only 30gal left.
Still shows available for me. OP needs to add that these are Electric to the title. No good for those who have natural gas as the conversion would be about $500-600.

Just replaced my 50 gal gas a month ago. Cheapest I could find was Lowe's but it was still over $500 for an AO Smith. I only bought it there to get my 10% discount and had a couple $100 gift cards I got 20% off. Yeah, it was certainly sticker shock as paid a little over $200 for the one I replaced several years ago. Now that I think about it those gift cards were actually cash back points from Discover with 20% bonus. I did recycle the old one and got about $15 for it at the center.
