For me, I would have come out ahead by applying for both cards. But I just hated the idea of wasting so much of the CSR benefits (I have curtailed travel during the COVID epidemic). And I wanted to preserve my options (the CSP made my 4th new credit card in the past 24 months, the CSR would have been my 5th).

Unlike AMEX, Chase doesn't care much about your manufacture spending. You can definitely load up gift cards just to meet the minimum spend requirement.
