nascompares has a great article covering Plex support across the Synology models:

https://nascompares.com/2021/03/1...1-edition/

Per this - no support for hardware transcoding.

Some other links I've found particularly useful:
CPUs: https://www.synology.com/en-us/kn...y_NAS_have
Max Storage Size: https://www.synology.com/en-globa...limitation
Hybrid RAID calculator: https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...0TB|4%20TB

I've been hunting for a used NAS for the past month and while I'd love to save a few hundred vs new, it seems that the newer NAS' are way better than the yesteryear ones. Anything 4-bays or bigger tends to hold their value quite well on the used market as well - at least in the case of Synology - which I prefer for their hybrid raid.

For a noob like me, after all of my hunting, I've decided on the 920+ just for the simplicity of it all.
Very good price. Unfortunately the price of storage is currently cost prohibitive for me. Good deal for plenty of other people though I'm sure
$800 and i don't remember if I seen it on sale for below $720 ever... usually around $750

I misspoke. I meant I would start with Raid mirroring which is RAID1. I am glad the feature exists.
In that case yeah it's super simple. SHR is great for expansion/growth. You can mix and match drive sizes, add them over time, etc. Just know that once you've established a volume, all subsequent drives added to that volume must be the same size as the largest disk in that volume or larger (so in your case, if you start with 2 16s, they all must be 16+.

I've had this for about 6 months and is my first Synology. I like to use ECC memory in my storage server to minimize corruption and this has it. I upgraded it to 32GB RAM and 10Gb. I took my shucked WD drives from Best Buy and used the firmware utility to convert them into native 4Kn from the default 512e configuration. I didn't need that much RAM but figured I would just max it out. I wanted a dual channel setup to feed the first gen Ryzen SOC in this with max memory bandwidth. Again, probably a total waste of money on the RAM but at least I don't have to worry about it. I have a 10Gb connection to my M1 Mac Mini and still a 1Gb to my PC. I have had zero issues with this. I also added two SSDs in addition to the 4 hard drives and two M.2 drives for caching.
Considering getting a second one for an active backup, sadly I have enough drives setting around to fill it up.

Been wanting a 4bay to upgrade my super slow 2 bay...is this that high rated? Never really researched this model
depends on what's the spec on your 2-bay. typically, QNAP has better hardware for the price. Synology is better on software.

Thanks! I do like some of the software but 99% of the time it's just a network share for my plex server. I'll look into qnap!!

Hey man, did you use Synology RAM? If not you mind pointing me to where you got your RAM?

Does it have to be ECC ram? What gives if i use two standard Corsair Non-ECC sticks?

Just so everyone knows, this NAS doesn't support hardware transcoding, so if that's a feature you need, then you shouldn't get this one.
