nascompares has a great article covering Plex support across the Synology models:

https://nascompares.com/2021/03/1...1-edition/

Per this - no support for hardware transcoding.

Some other links I've found particularly useful:
CPUs: https://www.synology.com/en-us/kn...y_NAS_have
Max Storage Size: https://www.synology.com/en-globa...limitation
Hybrid RAID calculator: https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...0TB|4%20TB

I've been hunting for a used NAS for the past month and while I'd love to save a few hundred vs new, it seems that the newer NAS' are way better than the yesteryear ones. Anything 4-bays or bigger tends to hold their value quite well on the used market as well - at least in the case of Synology - which I prefer for their hybrid raid.

For a noob like me, after all of my hunting, I've decided on the 920+ just for the simplicity of it all.
Very good price. Unfortunately the price of storage is currently cost prohibitive for me. Good deal for plenty of other people though I'm sure
$800 and i don't remember if I seen it on sale for below $720 ever... usually around $750

For people who plan to use it for Plex transcoding:

"Please be advised, the is no AMD transcoding support at this time.
The only solution with AMD CPUs involves the use of a Nvidia GPU card."

Depends what "better" is and how much you value your time. This is plug and play, if you have time to build your own NAS, setup the software then it gives you more flexibility but it will take time and maintenance.

Synology, cleaner, works out of box.

Self built NAS, more powerful (Depends if you even need the power, e.g. want to host things on it or add a GPU for plex transcoding), lots to configure/setup/maintain

Sorry I am a noob with NAS and Plex, so does this mean I won't be able to watch my media via ethernet cable to my TV + a laptop wirelessly at the same time?

You can, you just watch it at the native resolution of the media you are playing.

I think Synology's software is great. I have a DS1019+ that is running as a NAS, has Dockers for Pi-hole and Valheim dedicated server, Plex, Torrent downloads, and outgoing web/Openvpn proxy, two surveillance cameras being recorded, and photo/video backup for my Android phone. Setup was simply a breeze.

After spending my life working in IT, I love just having an 'appliance' that works everyday and only had a few mins of setup.
Any guidance on synology tor downloads / management? Thanks!

Install Download Station package and go through setup to assign it space. It supports a few different ways to download information, including HTTP, FTP, RSS and Torrent.

For example, you can supply it a 'magnet' link for the Torrent.

Btw for all the Plex Pass users, the 2021 model year Synology NASes are Ryzen based, so you might want to consider the 1520 or 920 if your clients don't support direct play for all your media (though those models are sometimes criticized for cheaper build quality and soldered-on RAM).

anyone know how many devices might actually end up with this issue? i know my ATV 4k will do fine, but im guessing iphones and ipads generally wont have this problem either?

i dont really see us streaming using any other clients.

My 920+ cannot play 4k in original in Plex. I was a little disappointed in that. I don't need to transcode it. I then got Nvidia Shield. Running Plex server on it worked for a few month now it's super unstable. I may just end up getting a PS5 for my 4K Blrurays.

The thing is, Synology NAS isn't just works. Apple kinda invent that idea, but Synology kinda strike the right balance of thing that works w/o hassle but with just the right amount of openness instead of the luxurious jail garden.

I would have wanted to get the 2021 model of Synology NAS w/ Ryzen APU CPU also but I did brought the DS1819+ Q3 last year. Then again I might just wait for thing to go a full circle on Synology NAS CPU structure. I mean, the latest and greatest is no longer x86-64 but high performance and energy efficient ARM. So, maybe in a few years we may see highend Synology NAS w/ ARM CPU.

As a counter example I run Emby on my 918+ and 4K content is flawless with direct play to a shield, roku (TCL), and Android/iOS.

Shame that Emby doesn't get the same love as Plex. Tends to be very solid, has the right set of features, and responsive devs if there are issues.
