I've been hunting for a used NAS for the past month and while I'd love to save a few hundred vs new, it seems that the newer NAS' are way better than the yesteryear ones. Anything 4-bays or bigger tends to hold their value quite well on the used market as well - at least in the case of Synology - which I prefer for their hybrid raid.
For a noob like me, after all of my hunting, I've decided on the 920+ just for the simplicity of it all.

I only received an email from Adorama that the manufacturer will ship my unit. Did you receive any email from the manufacturer regarding shipping status?
I m on the same boat as you. Ordered on the 7th, got Adorama email on drop-ship but nothing else yet. No tracking number or email from Synology.

although i don't typcially recommend transcoding 4K now with plex doing proper HDR conversion it actually works well. I still would recommend just having a different library for 4K and only allow direct stream for it
So, If you need as compact as possible, prebuilt is the way to go. Don't get hung up on the external access, it's not as important as people here will make it sound. For those that it is important, they don't dabble in Synology because they're running FreeNas or SnapRaid
Transcoding is when you need to convert the content from one resolution to another on the fly. Say, for example, you have a 4K movie that you need to play at 1080p. You may need to do this because your tv/media player doesn't support 4K, or your network connection isn't fast enough to stream at full resolution. Direct play is simply playing the content at its original resolution with no conversion.
I have used and upgraded 3 different models of Sysnology NAS over the years with zero issues and never looked back.
If not just TCing, then what's your point?
Just checking back with you… did you get your shipping notification/tracking number? I got still nothing even when i ordered June 7. Adorama tells me to just wait. 😒
