nascompares has a great article covering Plex support across the Synology models:

https://nascompares.com/2021/03/1...1-edition/

Per this - no support for hardware transcoding.

Some other links I've found particularly useful:
CPUs: https://www.synology.com/en-us/kn...y_NAS_have
Max Storage Size: https://www.synology.com/en-globa...limitation
Hybrid RAID calculator: https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...0TB|4%20TB

I've been hunting for a used NAS for the past month and while I'd love to save a few hundred vs new, it seems that the newer NAS' are way better than the yesteryear ones. Anything 4-bays or bigger tends to hold their value quite well on the used market as well - at least in the case of Synology - which I prefer for their hybrid raid.

For a noob like me, after all of my hunting, I've decided on the 920+ just for the simplicity of it all.
Very good price. Unfortunately the price of storage is currently cost prohibitive for me. Good deal for plenty of other people though I'm sure
$800 and i don't remember if I seen it on sale for below $720 ever... usually around $750

just got my shipping notification, should be arriving tomorrow!

I only received an email from Adorama that the manufacturer will ship my unit. Did you receive any email from the manufacturer regarding shipping status?

For home users who don't need 6 bays this is overkill and you could easily save $200 buying a 4 bay unit that will do what you want just as well. It looks cheap because of the coupon but $680 is plenty for this. They make a big deal of the "support" for 10GbE but you have to buy extra hardware for that, but you do get four 1GbE ports which is nice. As for the CPU... it's better than most at this price point I guess, but you really don't want to be transcoding on your NAS unless you don't give a crap about your data.

How is this NAS for Plex? Maybe 1-2 stream of 4k content.
are you transcoding it? because if not it will do more than 2

although i don't typcially recommend transcoding 4K now with plex doing proper HDR conversion it actually works well. I still would recommend just having a different library for 4K and only allow direct stream for it

If you want to run something non-synology, you may find better value in another brand. Synology does have great durability but the OS is one of their main selling points over other brands.
Circling back on this, I'm not finding much else with such a nice form factor. Do you have any recommendations for a DIY solution that ends up as compact, with drive bays mounted in sleds you can access externally?

For that it's going to be really expensive. Either a U-NAS case or finding a Lian Li q25b used (no hot swap sleds). The hot swap feature, imo, is just for looks. It's just as easy to pry a side off of a case. You can buy hot swap cages (Icy Dock sells one) to put into 5.25 bays, or Ebay various sas cages that you then have to figure how to connect them to a motherboard via sas (expanders) and stuff.

So, If you need as compact as possible, prebuilt is the way to go. Don't get hung up on the external access, it's not as important as people here will make it sound. For those that it is important, they don't dabble in Synology because they're running FreeNas or SnapRaid

A 10gbe card is $40. So it's not that much more. If the rest of your setup can run 10gbe, you're probably not considering Synology

Planning to plug ethernet cable to TV and mainly stream there (is that considered direct play?) and occasionally wireless on a laptop. Would this be enough? With the new Ryzen cpu, I'm at a loss of performance compared to the intel NAS. Thanks!

Transcoding is when you need to convert the content from one resolution to another on the fly. Say, for example, you have a 4K movie that you need to play at 1080p. You may need to do this because your tv/media player doesn't support 4K, or your network connection isn't fast enough to stream at full resolution. Direct play is simply playing the content at its original resolution with no conversion.

Well, we're just giddy for you. Just not sure why we should be warned of you're inability to setup a Synology NAS successfully.

I have used and upgraded 3 different models of Sysnology NAS over the years with zero issues and never looked back.

If not just TCing, then what's your point? Confused

I received my unit today. Adorama also sent an email with the tracking information from UPS on Friday, so it was already on its way when I received the mail.
