I do that with my son sometimes. Buy him a kit and then dump the bags out. Uses the instructions but no numbered bags. It much harder.

This set seems to go on sale quite frequently … wish some of the other modular sets would see the same discount. Really want to find the bookshop on sale before it goes out of print.

Save the boxes and bag the extra pieces. If you are careful you can get your money back or more. Lego is like a savings account that is a little harder to spend.
