Dropping this reply from another 'motion activated trash can' on to this one as well. With a little soldering knowlege, you can wire these so you no longer have to worry about replacing batteries. My trash can is less than 6" away from an outlet and I had all the parts, so it was a no-brainer for me.

this is what I started with. it's a different model/voltage, and he uses a 6v DC power adapter, to match it up for his 6v model..

I wired my trashcan to be USB powered, since using a voltmeter showed that my can required 1.5v in... I think this one runs at 6v like the video, so ymmv:

So... I've got USB connectors [amazon.com] and a USB male to USB male cable sitting around, which would be step 1. I bought a variety pack [amazon.com] for building other things. It came with Micro, which would make a little more sense for most people without a male to male cable on hand.

You just need to find the USB pinout for 5v+ and ground. Those get soldered to a buck converter [amazon.com] (mine came pre-labeled + and - on the underside), which will accept incoming voltage, and adjusts down via a Philips screw on the converters PCB. If you spring for the extra big ones [amazon.com], they have a little LCD screen on them that tells you the output voltage.

I soldered the output wires to the backside of the battery terminals. This allowed me to keep the PCB out of the way, and when I melted the window in the battery door, it sunk in the USB connector so it's actually out of the way of the batteries. I could unplug the USB from the back and run on batteries without any adjustments.
Here's where I love Slickdeals, (when I'm fiscally responsible) I've been procrastinating buying a new garbage since the ex moved out with the nicer trash can, (and using a trash can without a lid in the kitchen stinks) and here it is!

Then, lovely people comment on the fact that standard bags are actually 13 gallon, pointing out that the $35 deal is better, WITH a $1 filler, saving me from having to run another errand.

Thank you everyone!!
You'll be happy you spent the extra $5 when you see how hard it is to find 8 gallon bags. They exist, you just won't have all the options you have with 13 gallon bags (i.e. scented, drawstring, stretch material, etc.) Usually a single choice if they carry them at all.

That's useful for electricians and the like. That said, I wish motion detected trash cans came with power cords natively installed so that people can simply plug in and not worry about making mods or wasting $ on batteries.

Yeah my Simplehuman one does. Glad prefer wire over batteries.

Kind of surprised people are so about this deal. I had a hunch this looked cheap and crappy, and then I found this on Amazon with really poor reviews (different brand name but it's the exact same product). The rating is 4.5* but it appears to be bought, look at all the 1* reviews citing legitimate issues, and not just recent ones.

Take it from someone who dealt with an offbrand auto trash can for 2 years - it's not worth it. You will never want to replace your garbage can, but when you finally get rid of it you will feel a weight off your shoulders.

I would honestly rather either shell out for a proper one like simplehuman or just keep running a non-covered one until a deal on a proper one comes up.

I got a home depot 4 dollar bucket with a handle, no battery needed for my room. Kitchen, i guess this is pretty cool, now if only officedepot has D batteries with 100% back in rewards.
