It's not 'backlight' for that exact reason. Kindle Paperwhite's are "front-lit." They have LED in the bezels that refract the light on layer of glass just above the e-ink screen (think a fiber-optic cable, but flattened out into a think sheet of glass). There are patterns on that glass that direct the light downward onto the e-ink screen across the entire width of it, giving a fairly even lighting effect that reflects back up, the same as your indirect lighting does (except probably more evenly). It also doesn't contain much blue light, which is the type that causes eye strain in the first place.
So, do whatever you like, but eye-strain on a kindle paperwhite simply isn't a thing. It's really well designed in that regard.
Just ordered a moment ago, so this still works through the Amazon shopping app on android. As a previous poster mentioned, use the app's voice function and say "Alexa, order Kindle Paperwhite." It will look as if it is full price in the cart, but you'll see the discount upon checkout.
Also woot! selling various old models from $17.99 to $59.99 . It is sold out now but they post kindles usually few times a month. Probably selling trade ins.
I happily use my Kindle on daily basis to read books despite the fact that it's lacking warm lighting and a USB C port. It's probably my favorite digital device because it just does one thing really well.
I have the Paperwhite rn and I'll probably upgrade to the Oasis now if there's a good deal for the Prime Day. PW is great but I really want the bigger screen and physical buttons so Oasis it is.
That's what I did. Started with the kindle keyboard back in 2011 and each couple years I'd trade in and throw a little more money toward a better model. When oasis was $179 I jumped on it finally. Leap of faith. Bought the oasis with ads then chatted with Amazon to remove the ads and they agreed to do it at no cost.
I am sorry but what do those offer better over the current version? Are they a must have or just personal preference?
Warm Lighting?
USB-C?!?
Physical Buttons?
He's not wrong though. At the very least, a brand new device from a multi trillion dollar company shouldn't have micro usb at this point, I don't want to keep all these old cables around the house JUST for my kindle.

I got none of them, so I'm still on the previous generation...
