This does a good job summarizing the similarities and differences: "Synology DS920+ vs DS420+ NAS 4-Bay – Which Should You Buy? – NAS Compares" https://nascompares.com/synology-...d-you-buy/

Hardware wise,
The 920+ has a faster cpu and more RAM. Go with the 920+

Why is this getting thumbs up?

$13 less than another model that was posted yesterday (and still available for $39 more) that is superior

It depends on the motherboard but you can usually find PCI and PCI Express expansion slots which you could use to add support for m.2 drives, more sata connections, usb ports, etc. I keep looking at these NAS but I can't justify the cost to performance when compared with my old desktop/server. If you have a old desktop lying around I would definitely recommend this before dropping the money on a NAS... you could even install Synology OS on it if desired.
Energy efficiency and software optimization is what you pay for these guys. 1w running 24/7 could cost you an extra dollar annually, so if your computer runs 100w more than this guy, then u are looking at 100 dollar extra per year.

For me the 920+ I bought will be replacing a Dell T310 that couldn't do Quicksync to transcode 4k even if I had a GPU to throw into it. Not to mention 30w vs ~160w is going to add up fairly quick on the electric bill.

Sorry, where do you see the DS920+ for $439? I only see $549 now on Amazon, Newegg, etc.

I can never tell from the model numbers is this better than the one that was on Amazon prime yesterday.

Also is it easier to use an older desktop and how to put additional nvme card support in a desktop to make an NAS
Synology's naming scheme is pretty easy once you know it. The first number(s) is the number of drives it supports (direct and/or thru expansion) and the second 2 are the year it was introduced so those tend to be the same family. The DSxx20s are Intel based and came out in 2020. The 220 and 420 are dual core non expandable. The 720 and 920 are quad core expandable (in built 2 and 4 bays respectively). The 920 has 4 gigs of memory and the others have 2. All can add 4 additional gigs (officially, unofficially…)

So pay $400 now for a Synology NAS or $100/year for what you already have laying around. The eternal struggle.

Synologys have pretty good endurance and can last years without worrying about maintenance.

This runs on ONE watt? That seems crazy since each of the HDDs inside need power. You sure the math is right on that?

Also if you get a $200 desktop conversion, you could throw a cheap used GPU in it and throw on NiceHash to pay for your power costs. (For now...). Then you're about the same initial cost and it might even earn you some money eventually.

There's also the Synology warranty that no one mentioned. Some are 2 or 3 years depending on the unit purchased. So with the power usage, space and warranty the $400+ nas unit seems a bit more affordable.

that's one better way to look at it... but does your computer have the NAS software? or you have to go do all this extra stuff?

Yeah. So is this now, but anyway. That was during the Prime Day stuff, this wasn't... So your comment was about something that wasn't an option anyway.
