I've had a 400 light string of these up on my plum tree outside for the past 6 months now. However, I do have the wifi controller and the plug housed inside a waterproof box. I didn't want to risk it. But the lights are fully weatherproof.
It has a beautiful effect on my small yard. I don't have any wifi issues (about 30 feet from the router). Occasionally the app will decide to forget the auto timer, but other than that, they go on for a few hours every night without fail.
The app isn't nearly as good as Hue, but it still has enough effects and a single timer to accomplish what I need.
Edit for more app info:
Don't expect endless customization. They have about 30 preinstalled effects, like flames, twinkling, rainbow, etc. Each effect usually has two options that you can change but some don't have any. For example, if you want to slow down the twinkling effect and make it purple, they allow that. But if you want to slow down the flames and make them blue, you CANT because they don't give the option for some reason. There's still a lot of good combos, but you have to play around and find your favorites.

Damn. That's an incredible setup. Hope to get to that point one day.

That's really nice how many lights did you have on that tree?
