These don't have the chrome "adder" weights that the personal trainers have, so you can go up or down only in increments of 5 lbs instead of 2.5lbs.

Also, the bare handle of this set is fixed at 10lbs whereas the bare handle of the personal trainers is 5lbs, which allows a bit more flexibility with the weights (i.e., lifting 7.5lbs).

With that said, this is a great pandemic-era price for a new set of non-expandable powerblocks. The personal trainers were capped at 50lbs, and were popular deals at $300. This set offers much of the same functionality for $40 less.

Because the picture on the site shows a non-expandable set AND the description says non-expandable.

A diy method for moving up by 2.5lb increment is to grab some 2.5lb wrist weights

sheesh. Pandemic has really screwed these prices up for used powerblocks. I got mine like 3 years ago for $110. now they are as much as these new ones or more. Now that everything is starting to open up, I wonder if we'll see a lot of these his the market used and a giant price decrease.
when were powerblocks at $110? they've been $250-300 the past five years

Or 2 1/2 lb magnetic weights to stick on these.

I got some 1.25lb iron plate weights off Facebook Marketplace and glued on really strong rare earth magnets, and electrical taped them for good measure. I use them to quickly add or take off 2.5lbs at a time to my personal trainers. I prefer that method than futzing around with the adder weights. The bonus is that the 2.5lbs is evenly balanced on both sides of the dumbbell.

One drawback for the powerblocks with adder weights is that having just one 2.5lb weight in a handle makes it feel unbalanced. Adding the iron weight plates on either end keeps it balanced and even.
I debated between that method versus wrist/ankle weights with my 90lb Sport Exp model so I didn't have to fiddle with the adder weights. I considered possibly some washers down at home depot along with some amazon strong magnets but couldn't decide on a brand. Had a workout needing to jump by 2.5lb so I grabbed some wrist weights down at TJmaxx/Marshalls/Ross (couldn't remember which store).

Suggestion on earth magnets? Link to those strong magnets that you used?

Any suggestion on 1/2lb magnetic weights? Didn't want to spend money on the expensive platemates.

You can buy Plate Mates, which are small incremental weights you tack on to your existing weights or powerblocks via magnetism. But Plate Mates are really expensive for what they are, which are basically magnets.

What I did was basically build DIY plate mates for a fraction of the cost using small iron weight plates and rare earth magnets. See the following tutorial: https://www.reddit.com/r/homegym/...=post_body

Can't recall which rare earth magnets I got, but they were from Home Depot and were similar in size and strength as the ones described in the Reddit tutorial.

One note: the Plate Mates and DIY plat mates don't work as well with the urethane or "Pro" powerblocks since the weight stacks don't have a clean metal surface.

Thank you for the explanation. I didn't need the lower weights and COVID was the reason I bought the PTS. I am fine with what I have but would buy this over what I have.

What makes you think that this is the non expandable version?

I got my first pair of powerblocks from woot and was able to get the two expansion kits bringing weight up to 90 per block.
These are "adjustable" but not "expandable". The expandable model as EXP written on them.

Maybe the set you purchased before were different.

Big fan of PowerBlocks. I've owned a pair of the USA-built Elite models that are expandable since 2018 and they've been rock solid. I was hesitant to spend the money initially but they're really worth it. I needed an extra pair so I bought these non-expandable 50lb set a few months back and the only issue I've noticed is that the magnet for the weight selector doesn't seem to be as strong as my Elites.

One nice thing about the non expandable models is that it's much quicker to change by increments of 5lbs because there are no internal internal weight cylinders to take in and out. However, because of that there are less incremental weight options and the non-expandable models can only go as low as 10lb.

Elite - 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10,15, 17.5, 20 25, 27.5, 30, 35, 37.5, 40, 45, 47.5, 50
Sport 50 (non-expandable) - 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50

Edit: Another thing to mention is that Sport 50 has a thicker handle compared to the Elite. Also, because the Sport 50 doesn't have the internal weight cylinders, there is more room in the handle area so it'll require some decent wrist and grip strength to balance the weights like a traditional dumbbell.

Who needs 2.5 more lbs on dumbbells?

"Yo bro I maxed out my curl yesterday, did 22.5 lbs! Think I could have stretched it to 23.75, but these weights only go up by 2.5"

LOL

I use 2.5 increments all the time. If my goal is to hit a 7 RPE at 10 reps, and I was at a 6 RPE previous set, 2.5 lb increment may be the perfect amount to get me there. Try going up in 5 lb increments on a lateral raise and tell me how your progression looks after 5 sets.

I paid $125 for mine. Seems like only a dummy would pay $300 for used when you (pre-COVID) could have gotten them new for the same price.
