These things are very unlikely to happen again. WF got hit with tons of fees and penalties and invested hefty in their risk compliance departments This whole thing sent a shockwave across the industry that also benefited banks' employees. Tellers don't need to aggressively cross sell bank product anymore.
Good all-rounder for those looking for a generalist card and better than Apple Card for merchants who don't take Apple Pay (there are a sizable bunch). Points are awarded monthly and with a $25 minimum for statement credit or check back (Direct Deposit isn't possible unless you have a bank account with them). Wells Fargo's latest pay with points option (I think inspired by Chase Pay Yourself Back) can get around this threshold - redemption is 1 cent to 1 point and points balance must cover the entire amount (no partial offsets). Cell Phone Protection is a good plus, few cards offer a higher rewards rate on top of this perk.

Another thing - Wells Fargo act funny if you pay too many times a month online (I think over 3 payments blocks you from making online payments for the rest of the statement period), but you can always pay over the automated phone system if you exceed this limit.
FNBO also has a 2% cash back Visa with a pre-qualification link. Might be helpful for those who don't have perfect credit and are unsure if they'll get approved. It even tells you the credit limit they'll pre-qualify you for. I got approved yesterday; it'll be my highest limit card so far.

are they seriously still in business? I thought they just opened up accounts for you anyways so you don't even need to sign up to bank on this deal...
smh...

Sorry Wells Fargo - but you still suffer from a lack of trust...

If you want to boycott WF because of the scandal, that is one thing.

However, due to the scandal, WF is now under increased scrutiny. I would say this makes them less likely to commit such shady acts as compared to other banks.

It blows my mind how so many people can just completely not care about getting like $500-1000 extra a year. Like is your discipline that bad that you will exceed that amount in stuff you would have never otherwise bought and interest charges?

I've always wondered if all of these people know exactly what they're giving up. I have a feeling some of them don't, and just see it as "only 2%", and not as a real world figure such as $1000/year. That's a hell of a lot of money just to use a specific form of payment.
unfortunately it is a thing. there are people out there, lots of people out there, this is dangerous business. they will absolutely lose control and end up owning thousands and thousands in interest and behind 90 or even 120 days. it takes a lot of work to pull together everything it takes to keep on top of this and we've been doing it for years so we have it down but others....not so much.

i have friends who routinely pass over $10, $20, even $50. they won't even blink at the difference. if they were in the store in line (at retailer buying electronics, exactly where you shouldn't be) and i called and said i'm 10 minutes away, hold off until i get there, i have a $50 off coupon for you before you buy that gopro, they would be standing in the parking lot after paying full price when i arriving saying they didn't have time to wait...they have to GO. they have no rewards program, they don't both to collect points automatically, they use credit cards with 0% back and 22% interest. they have no idea and don't care about $100, $200, $500 because they didn't have it first and lose it so it doesn't matter to them.

im not talking badly about them because i've given up on trying. the biggest excuse i get is i don't have time....which was true in 2005: carrying around extra membership cards, physical coupons and gift card with short expiration dates and confusing terms, payouts that took one year instead of one week. yet today, they won't even clickthru a portal. sad. more for me i guess.

And yet they got caught yet again... and fined 250million more for their shady practices...

Obviously if you don't care about a company that has no morals or values except to line their pockets at the cost of their customers, apply for a credit card from them. But I'm curious, when would you draw the line? How many times do they have to get caught before you say 'maybe I won't give them my business'...

Absolutely not. I purchased $1K VGCs from Staples and bonus was credited after the statement closed. My wife purchase eVGCs from giftcards.com and she also received the bonus after the statement closed.

Related, I know people like who figured it out and just quit using cards entirely because of it. Telling those people to even use credit cards again is like telling someone who made it through rehab in good shape to try drugs again, they just won't, and I can't blame them.

Absolutely. CCs are not for everyone. They should be using debit instead. There are cash back debit cards now too.

Perhaps I'm the exception to the rule but I'm a cheapskate and I use my cards to reduce what I pay with Cashback bonuses. I'd pay with Cash if I could get a price reduction (I used to do this with checks when merchants allowed it). Also in that research they mention people not caring about paying more for tolls when using a CC. I go around any local tolls. I want to pay zero. I also pay off every card which is why Capital One doesn't want me

If you have a big payment you're going to have to make for insurance or something, that's a payment you're making regardless. that's a great time to grab a new card and meet the purchasing requirement for the bonus in one shot.

If someone is stupid using a card, that's their fault not the card. Since we are here on SD, we're supposed to never pay retail - I rarely do.
