Not sure why this deal is getting bad reviews, but I think it's a good deal unless someone think it's not and wants to tell us why

Agree not sure why the thumbs down. This is actually a good deal especially being 8w with the extended batteries, better antennas, and programming cable.

Prob getting TD due to the the base models running $18-22 on sale in multi-packs of the 5W model with the std battery (a quick amazon searched turned up a 5 pack with 1800mAh for $110). Either that or HAMs being d*cks (don't @ me, I'm General licensed).

No, it's easy-peasey. Harder to arrange to take the test than it is to pass.

I don't know about the thumbs down, except that a lot of ham operators don't care for this radio. It's partly snobbery, and partly that the output is really sloppy. Or at least used to be, I haven't kept up.

Curious about whether or not the upgrades in this one over the cheaper base models are worth it

That's not exactly true. It does require some study, or at least memorization. There's no chance you're going to pass it going in blind unless you're already familiar with the concepts due to your occupation or something.

The extended batteries are definitely better than the ones that come with the base model. And any antenna is better than the base rubber duck.

Sure, you can't go in completely blind; you have to memorize a small amount of info (being familiar with the concepts is both overkill and insufficient). But I passed the technician, general, and extra in one sitting, and compared to the easiest college course, it was easy.

Thanks! I understand, I was thinking of bringing something like this to a state park since theirs no cellphone signal their. Not sure if that's even allowed with a ham license...

not sure if you need a tall antenna and all that or. can use like a walkie talkie.

You can use it like a walkie talkie with someone who also has a license. These radios are line-of-sight, so the terrain could stop you. You could possibly be in range of a repeater, for greater distance. You can look those up.

If the material isn't something you're familiar with, you'll have to study for a few weeks FOR SURE.
I got 100% on the technicians so they let me take the general for free, which I of course failed because
I hadn't studied for that. Not super hard, but not easy-peasey either.

Wow - I did study for the tech and general licenses and passed them easily, but I still haven't taken the Extra because of all the concepts they cover in it. You did great to do all that in one sitting!

Thanks. Though the set of all the questions and their answers were published online. I never got that deal in school.

Edit: I didn't mean that the General and Extra were drop-dead easy. But the technician is, and it's all you need to use this radio.
