Just for an FYI, the higher the SEER number the more efficient the unit is. A 20 SEER unit is twice as efficient as a 10 SEER.

Those aren't DIY kits and require an HVAC Tech install for warranty. So unless you know how to vacuum lines yourself (which isn't a requirement for the kits the OP posted), you have to also calculate in labor costs. In my area that is at least $1k for a reputable vendor.

I'm in SA, TX and was quoted about 7k for labor not including 5-6k for their unit. outrageous.
Boston MA... best quote was $6300 unit and install for 1 head unit. Another quote was a flat $10k but that guy basically walked through the house and didn't take any measurements so he wasn't getting my business anyway...lol.

12k at 20seer can be had for $660 on eBay.https://www.ebay.com/itm/12000-BT...2403585634

Pioneer 18k 19seer for $1,050. https://www.ebay.com/itm/PIONEER-...4262294578

23seer 18k for $825 https://www.ebay.com/itm/303861949132

IMO this shouldn't cost more than $1,000.
You must be kidding comparing eBay to Costco's.

Would this be good for a converted garage? No idea if it's better to go this route or extend the ducts..

To install a system similar to this(not as good) about 1400-1800. But they will provide custom length lines.

18K Might be a bit of overkill. You would want to go with 12K system.

Something else to note - this quote from the eBay entry for the Pioneer:
Quote :
Once shipped the equipment is generally non-returnable. Please contact us for returns if required for certain reasons beyond your control within maximum 14 days. If we agree, we will issue an RMA number and other instructions to return the equipment. Returned equipment is to be shipped freight prepaid by the buyer and must be re-packed in its original condition and in its original packaging. Additionally, we will refund only the purchase price minus all original freight costs, EBay fees, PayPal or credit card charges and 20% restocking fee. PLEASE NOTE; AFTER IT IS INSTALLED, THE EQUIPMENT IS NOT RETURNABLE.
That ain't the way Costco talks.
I got counterfeit console controllers and obviously used smartthings hubs sold as new, all from highly rated sellers, on Ebay. No effing way I am getting a 1K AC unit from that place.

Everyone thinks businesses operate for free. How much are permits for your city? Many HVAC companies require to use permits to avoid issues with cities later. Also reputable HVAC companies don't sell Mr. Cool bargain baseman equipment, look at having a bid given from Costco and they'll set an appointment with a hvac company they deemed quality enough to represent them. They also use Lennox equipment not the stuff you'll see here on slick deals. Remember professional installation IS NOT DIY, you won't have long ass 25 ft of lineset that looks like a weird snake outside your house because you can't braze a line. You'll need to run a 220V line from your main panel adding the disconnect box to cut power, proper removal of condensation as well from behind the unit. Many city codes do not allow it to drop the condensation onto cement. Either a designated line will be made to guide the water into a flower bed, dirt, grass or a French drain will be made into the cement. Not to mention you'll have warranties backed by Costco and the hvac company who performed the installation.

All in all you'll need one person to install (maybe two) to hold the unit while mounting, an electrician to run the dedicated line and move around breakers in your panel if needed and someone to deal with city permits, someone to order the unit and materials needed etc.

Sounds like it can be done for practically nothing doesn't it??

Portable ones suck - I've used two for the last several years. They take forever to cool a room, are super loud, bulky, use alot more energy, and need more maintenance (drain water from unit manually).

If you want cheap low maintenance A/C's, best option are window units but they're not as quiet as these mini-splits.
I had a Haier portable unit. It was 12K BTU and it was fine for living room. It had dual hose and don't recall what tech it had but I never had to drain it. Even after leaving it on for 2 days. But yes they are noisy as the whole unit is indoor. At least with window or in wall units some if the noise is partially drowned out. Now I got a Mitsubishi mini split and although it's an expensive investment… the rate it cools the room and how quiet it is… I don't know how my family put up with any other AC types.

I spent $12k for a 5 ton full central system installed and it was a high SEER. Whoever quoted you is scamming.

So 8K is a reasonable number then?

I live in the Chicago area and the cheapest estimate I got for a dual head unit fully installed was 6K I think, maybe 7k. Another HVAC company quoted 14k. Material costs are probably in the range of 2k to 3k. Making between 4k and 8k for a days work is highway robbery. If someone can break down how 4k to 8k for a days work to install in a house makes any sense let me know.

That's their FU price.

Typically contractors are able to wrap all of their pricing into a complete job. It really pisses them off when somebody provides their own equipment. Plus in the summer they usually have all they can handle. If you're looking for a deal, get it installed in October, shop around.
