The Alliant Cashback Visa Signature card has removed the annual fee (previously $59) and now offers 2.5% cash back on up to $10,000 in purchases a month ($120,000 a year) with no annual fee. Once the $10,000 per month limit is reached, additional purchases will earn 1.5% cash back.

In order to qualify for the Tier One (2.5%), credit union members must have an Alliant checking account, sign up for electronic statements, maintain a $1000 average balance in the checking account, and receive at least one electronic deposit per month. Mind posting back if it does indeed qualify? I'd like a confirmation before I go through the trouble of opening my own account. No foreign transaction fee makes this an excellent card to use abroad also!

I talked to them over the phone when I signed up. They stated that the only requirement is for you to make a deposit once a month. The deposit can come from an ACH transfer, an ATM deposit, in-branch deposit, or even transfer from an internal savings account.

My plan is to just pay the credit card from the checking account by transferring the monthly balance from my Alliant Savings to the checking account and then to the credit card.

If you're spending 10K a month why the fark would you care about $600???
Well, 2.5% essentially negates the plastiq fee, so, basically no more issues with meeting minimum spends. Ever.

This card looked so good until I read the no cash back on gift or prepaid cards limitation Frown

Is this a common restriction? Haven't read the cashback terms of my cards but also haven't noticed gift cards not earning cashback on them.

Extremely common.

But it's usually intended to mean things like generic pre-paid VISA cards-- not things like 3rd party store gift cards.

That said- unless the bank gets level 3 data (and AFAIK only Amex really does) they've got no idea what you bought.

Just posting back, as they responded to my inquiry. I have 1000 in checking and a recurring deposit coming from another account of $10 each month.

They responded today:

Hello Solomon,

Thank you for contacting us. Yes, I do show that you have met the requirements for Tier 1. Please keep in mind you will need that recurring monthly electronic deposit.

Would be better off with a 2% card like the Wells Fargo Active Cash and depositing that $1k in a high yield savings account or other investments.

I don't think the math really supports this claim unless you hardly ever spend on the card anyway.

For example:
https://www.bankrate.com/banking/savings/rates/

The highest yield savings account listed is 0.61% (technically 0.55 for a savings account, 0.61 is a money market).

On $1000 that'll earn you.... $6.10 for the year.

This card gives you 0.50% over top of a 2% card on every dollar of spend.

So you need only spend about $1220 for the whole year to be even with you "high yield savings" idea on the Alliant card.

Every dollar you spend over $1220 for the year puts you ahead of the 2% card.

Of course if you've got BoA Plat status (easiest done with an IRA or other investment account) you can get 2.625% back on everything.... but not everyone has the resources to get that.

This deal is a much lower bar to jump.

I didn't realize the rates dropped so much since I last checked, which was around 3%. I guess that would mean $6k spending? Not to mention the $200 bonus from WF, which would mean another 40k spending at 2.5% to beat. The tier system is kind of annoying. I guess for long term this could work well for big spenders.

and transfers from another financial institution all count.
This looks as simple to satisfy as setting up an automated transfer from my main bank to Aliant on the 1st, automated transfer out of alliant (or automated pull) on the 5th and just pass the same money back and forth.

This is definitely worth the extra 0.5% unless the $1000 permanently sitting in the account is a problem.

New card signups (cash, miles, points, all of em) almost always offer much better RoI on spend than normal point earning from existing cards.

That said- if you've got 10k/mo in legit CC spend you're probably gonna run out of new cards to sign up for within 12-18 months... MAYBE if you've got a P2 you could swap off and continu-churn SUBs at that rate but the various bank roadblocks are gonna be fun to keep up with through all that.

Even though it's going to earn you cash back, there are restrictions or limitations on how to redeem the cash back. Some cards only allow you to use it as credit or payment into another product (loan, mortgage, etc). Not all cards will allow you to take the cash out in a form of a check.

Great deal if you live in Alabama (looks like Anniston area) and work for one of the companies on their list:

Anyone can become a member of the Northeast Alabama Bicycle Association and then you can join AOD to get the credit card.
