The Coway is currently rated the top air purifier on WireCutter [nytimes.com], but in their review they rank the Winix at nearly the same performance.

If you get the Costco Winix on sale for $99 with the additional filters, that's definitely a better deal, but with wildfire season upon us it may be wise to purchase the Coway now.

Box fan filter builds are effective for what they are, but are not comparable as a household appliance. They are tools for specific scenarios. Box fans are loud and power-hungry. This Coway is effectively silent at lowest setting, barely noticeable at medium, and as loud as a box fan on high. The Coway also has a particulate sensor for automatically determining which power cycle is appropriate given the air conditions. Most of the time, the appropriate cycle is Low, because it has been maintaining the air quality at all times. So most of the time, as a Coway or comparable air purifier owner, you are not thinking about your air purifier. It's just...not the same.

If you just want an air purifier for a short timeframe, or for emergency use, then sure, build a box fan purifier setup, but if you want an appliance, you should get an appliance, if you can afford to.

No problem, I use the OEM kit with the honeycomb filter and the replacement HEPA for the 1512hhs: https://cowaymega.com/products/co...filter-set Then I find the thinner carbon filter from Amazon, they are like dime a dozen, sometimes I have to cut them down to size because they're slightly too big. I'm sure you can look around for just the honeycomb carbon filter if you don't want the extra HEPA filter.

No other issues at all, been using it like this for about a year. The airflow is pretty much the same, I don't think that extra carbon filter adds much resistance. It's just awkward installing it. I guess on the newer models there's some plastic slots to keep it in the housing while you reinstall the pre-filter. But once you sandwich it in there, make sure you get a good click when you install the prefilter, it's good to go.

I don't have the numbers handy, but I did check the math as to how much it costs to get a high MERV filter plus a box fan - and bearing in mind the MERV filter has to be replaced more often than HEPA. I don't think the diy setup is as effective nor cost effective.

Coway air purifiers are awesome. You can definitely tell a difference with them and their sensors actually work really well.

I have one as well and you can just press the auto button. It automatically adjusts. The sensors are phenomenal as it adjusts really well. Super quiet too. The second highest setting is still quite enough to watch a movie in the living room and hear everything well. You can barely hear it, we either use that setting or auto.

I have one of these, they are great. The real challenge is for bigger rooms - using a product like BlueAir and finding non OEM filters that arent $70 a pop.

Not sure if it has been stated in this thread already, some states have rebates for energy star air purifiers. For NJ it's $50 flat.

I just received mine today. It's my first air purifier. Do you guys turn on the ionizer? I'm seeing mixed reviews online whether to use the ionizer or not.

The two pack link I posted still shows in stock for me. There is a 'single' filter listing for this unit too and that one seems always out of stock.

I think the debate is if/how much ozone it produces. You do NOT want to generate ozone in your living space.
