I hope the best to whomever buys these models just be careful. Sorry OP. Not trying to thread crap, I just know those returns BB has listed do look tempting as well.
I've had one of my friends who pre-ordered one of these and had to return it for the same reasons. This Amazon review written a couple of days ago sums it up. Test it out if you can.

Reviewer:
This laptop has a known issue where it will reboot randomly. No one seems to be sure why it happens. It could be a botched power management or lousy liquid metal application, or something else. This problem has been reported many times.

ATTENTION: BEST BUY IS RUNNING A SCAM, AND ASUS DOESN'T CARE!

Best Buy is running a scam where they are selling these defective laptops as "Open Box", in excellent or like new condition, but they're actually returns like this one with this reboot problem. They hope the problem won't happen to you within the 15 day Open Box return window, so when it happens they refuse to take the return.

-Re-seating the RAM, using a different cable, updating all drivers and bios, resetting Windows or turning off "Auto restart on system error" doesn't fix it.
There are obviously issues with this laptop such as dead GPUs. But if you get a working one, this is a great deal for the specs.

I am also seeing open-box for as low as $1320 but I would avoid those as they are probably ones with these issues.
Good deal on a great laptop with a terrible GPU flaw. As far as I know, Asus still hasn't fixed the issue with a massive number of these having dead GPUs due to liquid metal issues. Easy returns to Best Buy but it's a toss up if you'll get a DOA unit or not.

Definitely a good gaming laptop for the money, as long as it's not immediately or near-immediately DOA

Yeah and the problem is since it's liquid metal, it flows so who knows when will it kill the laptop. could be DOA, weeks or even months.

Good point, but I think Asus warranty should be able to cover it for at least 1 year. Maybe worth getting extended warranty on this.

I mean there are a lot of positive reviews as well. And if the issue was really really common, Asus would have probably recalled these. I know at least 2 people who got this at launch and have been super happy with it.

I purchased the laptop last week when it was $1,549 and was able to price match over online chat.

Can someone who is happy with this laptop post the manufacturing date of the laptop?
I am trying to wean out the bad ones versus the good ones. I do not think Asus is as stupid as to not test these under heavy load and not realize the "metal issue" that is causing shorts. There are always different revisions. I just ordered one so i can test it out myself. Peace

I've had this laptop for over a month now grinding away at ETH @ 44 MH 24/7 and no issues. If you purchase it and it begins rebooting intermittently then take it back.

I've also called BestBuy to match this new sale which they did happily.

Possible to buy one and repaste the gpu my self? Or do I still run the chance of dead GPUs? Like they are already bad out of the factory?

You will void the warranty if you do this. Just get a new one .. .run it like hell.... Download warzone and let it run over extended periods of time. Play a few games at random troughout the day. You have to heat up the GPU to the max in the first 15 days of having it. Watching videos will not do. You have to run that GPU.
